Gender ID help, please....UPDATE page 5

OMG You zipped their mouths shut with zip ties? Poor roosters...

Mine would simply be hard cider...the lightweight kind sold at the grocery store, ROFL. I don't think daiquiris would go well with sexing quail...

#2 and #3 do have spotting, though it is minimal. A lot of people would eliminate those from the breeding stock since they aren't as 'clear cut' as they should be. I have a couple of golden girls that only have spots on the lower parts of their necks, but they are still girls

That is why I've been holding out some hope with those two. There are a couple of spots on #1 but they didn't show up in the picture. I'm pretty sure #1 is going to turn out to be a roo. #2 & #3, though, well I can dream...

As for a breeding program, well, I don't "really" have one. I just need more egg layers.

I do have more eggs cooking now. Here's hoping for all girls.

#1 is definitely a male, if you look at his face in that pic you'll notice some 'red' on the lower part of his face (in the white). If he was in full-blown breeding mode that would be very red (rust). It is known as the blush and only males get that.

ETA: Males shouldn't have any spotting on their breasts, though they can have some 'dark' feathers underneath their golden breast feathers. This can look like spotting, but it's not. If your others truly have spots on their breasts then they are not males...unless they are really young, like 3 weeks or less.

Nope, they'll be six weeks old in about 12 hours...

Yes, I see the red on his face now that you point it out. I figured he was a roo. A pretty nice looking one, if I do say so myself.

Ya, number 2 and 3 are the ones I am having trouble with. But mine have a little more spotting but look odd. I let 2 go into a breeder cage thinking they were male and dang but they didn't both lay eggs at 11 weeks. Out they will go.

Last time I let 2 stay in the grow out cage thinking they were females and Bang they started crowing. Out they went.
Lets see if number 3 is a female and starts laying around week 11. :rolleyes:Then out it can go.

I just don't want any browns that are hard to sex or take 2 months to finally decide to lay an egg. I am thinking, somewhere back along the line something got crossed for some reason unknown. Maybe British Range.

Lets see that drags out hope for another 4-5 weeks before you cull all 5 males. No, I don't want them. Did I have ya going.

Even Vanilla around 5 weeks is crowing and he's a White. Course he had the stance down pat at day one.

Wait a minute, if they are to easy to sex then there is no excuse for beer or wine or hard cidar.
Maybe you should keep one after all. Then next time you can get confused on the Females, worked for me.

Oh, never fear. They'll have plenty of time to show me if they are male or female. I'm a vegetarian and any males born / hatched around here get to live as long as the females. They pretty much get a life of utter luxury and laziness. I consider feeding and housing the males part of the price I pay to have home produced eggs...did the same with chickens during my entire adult life, too. Part of why I think I like quail better than chickens. At least coturnix boys aren't going to spur me, ROFL.

I actually agree with Shelley and #3 looks to start laying, maybe even tomorrow afternoon. Can we make quess's as when they start laying. I just did. But remember, I have often been wrong.

#1 is a good looking J Brown, are the others as nicely colored?

Shelley, I don't think I have looked at a M. Gold's breast to sex them. I just look at their heads. Talk about easy.
Anymore, I like easy.

edited, that was white not gold I was looking at.

Wouldn't that be nice! I wouldn't complain to have my daily egg production go up. They have some natural light coming in a large picture window on the S side from the time the sun comes up. It's not bright but it's light. Then, they get their lights on when I get up & off when I go to bed. Typically it's 16-17 hours of lights a day. Plus I haven't let their temps drop too low yet (and the weather has cooperated for the last week.) So, I should see eggs from any girls.

about the 20 eggs in the incubator. I won't be surprised if the five from my birds are infertile. He has still been breeding but not as active. They began to moult shortly after I started the incubator so his fertility may be down.

As for the other 15 eggs, they are quail lady's color assortment. We'll hope the USPS didn't shake them around too much!
