gender??... I'm sure one tried crow this mornin at 6am!!

Oh no!! I was hoping by some miracle he wud be a pullet! Im worried how freckle will react to speckles rehoming! Its gonna kill me having to do this! They were the first two chickens i bought so they mean a lot to me!

do i rehome them together so they are not split up or do i keep freckle?
If noise is an issue you could try out one of those no-crow collars. I don't have any experience with them myself but that may be an option to try before rehoming him. It'd be a shame to give up such a pretty bird.

Hey thanks for your posts! I wish id have known about the collars!

I was absolutly didtraught believe me! I wanted to keep them so bad but unfortunately i do not live in a secluded area so the difficult but practicle decision was made to rehome my beautiful pekins! It was a difficult day and i cried and cried. However they have gone to a wonderful 5 acre small holding where they will be used for breeding. The couple were lovely and put my mind at ease. I will miss them terribly, but i know its for the best and they will have lots of lady chickens to have fun with!

Iv enjoyed the experience of raising chicks, (iv got three 7week old) atm. BUT at the end of the day im in a built up area getting carried away with wanting a country life... its a **** shame its too expensive to buy a house in the countryside! Its been fab to have young chickens and raise chicks but the upset of rehoming my pekins, and the worry that (even though they are supposdd to be pullets) any of my chicks turing out male. I think in future ill just do point of lay.

Thanks everyone!!

It's great to know your birds will continue their lives in another loving home.

And I agree with you all the way on living in the countryside - I'd love to do it too, but unfortunately job-wise and money-wise it'd be too difficult to pull off (at least for now).

Though BYC does help a lot in alleviating some of my flocklust. Seeing other peoples' birds and hearing their stories are almost as good as having the chickens with me. But perhaps I'm just weird...

I totally agree BYC has really helped unload all my flocklust too!! Plus its really nice to know and talk to other people who share the same interests. Most people think im nuts because of my young age and that i own chickens and grow my own fruit and veg and make jams etc from them. Its a rarity where i live!! Its a great community on here everybody is understanding and supportive and not judgemental!

Im go looking at some chickens in next couple week as i want a couple more to get the amount of eggs im after. Im off looking at a cream legbar and a white leghorn. Iv got a cream legbar X light sussex, (only 8weeks old). But iv wanted a pure cream legbar for ages! Such a pretty chicken and pretty eggs to match! And white leghorn because they are great egg layers of good size eggs and iv just got this thing for white chickens with yellow legs lol!!

What chickens do you have? (Dont mean to sound rude just looovvee looking at everyones chickens its interesting to see what type people keep and if they have unusual breeds or if they have mixed flocks or just stick to one breed)

At the moment I've only got two quails. The remainder of my flock are back in Sydney (I moved to Canberra earlier this year).Unfortunately I really don't have enough of a back garden to keep chickens happy at the moment.

But I've kept light and speckled sussexes, Rhode Island reds, Australorps, ameraucanas, Barter Blacks (RIR x Australorp), and lots and lots of silkies. I think at its largest my flock was ~30 birds. One day I aim to surpass that record.

That sounds like a brilliant flock! Iv been looking at getting some quail.. iv got a shed that would be ideal to make into an avery! Id love to have a big flock like that! Im gonna keep looking for allotments, smallholdings to rent/buy and have a decent sized flock and polytunnel for fruit n veg!
