This 6 week old chick is getting a red comb and wattles much sooner than the other pullets we have. This is supposed to be a female but I know hatcheries have a margin of error, so I am wondering if this might be a male.
Thanks for any help!

Nope, just a pullet with a bigger comb than the rest. There is a good bit of variability in comb size.

Cockerels would have two barring genes and their pattern is noticeably lighter because of it.

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

Agreed pullet.

A male would have wider white stripes and thinner black, the opposite of what yours is showing.

And that redness is actually in the face behind the comb. There tends to be some flushing that comes and goes making it harder to tell at times.

But those waddles and comb are perfectly on par for pullet. Those waddles are mostly flesh colored. Boys are noticeably RED. I have raised so many birds, I have little to know doubt on this gender (educated) guess. :pop

ETA: I like BR, not very many make it 2 pet status but 1 has and another has made it past several cuts. :love

Thanks everyone! This is my first barred rock so I'm unfamiliar with their patterns. I really appreciate the feedback. We have one rooster and do not want a second so this is good news
