I got my spot check thermomator from brinsea and I stuck it through a small hole to check temp. It read 101.2. Too high, so I change the thermostat. I candled the eggs and most of them had intact aircells and there was something bigger than a yolk inside the egg. There are no viens in any of the eggs. All I see is something that looks larger than a yolk. ANY ideas or thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.

To measure temp the thermometer should be placed on or at least even with the eggs. Not through a hole in the bator. There are good odds it won't be accurate. You probably just don't have a good enough candling light to see veins. In most darker eggs you won't see the veins and without a good light you won't. All you'll see is a dark mass that grows bigger. I'd leave the whole thing alone. 101 is not a bad temp and the thermometer could be off by a degree or 2. Even if it wasn't affected by where you measured the temp most thermometers have a 1 degree error range if they are good thermometers in the first place. Some can be 3 or 4 degrees off. That's why the genesis instructions tell you to do a hatch without changing the temp settings irregardless of what a thermometer reads and then if they hatch early or late alter the settings accordingly.

The temp was taken through a very small hole in the bottom of the incubator. Where it is not a factor. The probe was at egg level too. The thermomator was a very nice accurate, it measure +- .2 F. I believe that is is very accurate. The candler I use is a Mag lite, professinal grade flashlight. But you are very right and it may not be powerful enough, so I will wait another 3-4 days before I toss any eggs

Thanks.

You didn't mention when you set the eggs. What day are the eggs on? I just checked my batch last night on day 3. Some of them the veining (spider) was quite obvious and in others it appeared to just be forming. I will recheck at day 7 before tossing any of my eggs. Also, what kind of eggs? I could not see through hardly any of my last batch of Maran eggs (choc brown) and also some of my olive eggs as well (had chicks hatch from these eggs just had to leave them in the bator and play the wait and see game:).

Are these eggs from your own hen and roo? Shipped fertile eggs? I have a Light Brahma hen, I've never had much difficulty candling and seeing the veining in her eggs. By Day 10, the development should be obvious. If not and you decide to toss the eggs, you might want to spot check one of the eggs for development. I've had temp spikes as high as you mentioned without having any untoward outcomes in my hatch. Also, do you have a still-air or forced-air incubator?

They were shipped eggs. The incubator is forced air. What should I be looking for when I candle on Sunday?

You should quite easily see a dark mass (the developing chick), the blood vessels, and the air sac. There are some great pix on the forum for you to compare to help. On some of the darker brown eggs, the blood vessels may not quite be so easy to see as on the lighter eggs. Check out the link below. The eggs pictured on the link are on Day 8 of development. Let me know how your next candling goes:)

I tried all sorts of maglites and really don't see the hype. Maybe they are good regular flashlights but for candling purposes they aren't that great. You definitely won't be able to see in to darker shelled eggs enough to see veining. If these are brown or blue eggs I would not toss any unless they smell bad or are much lighter, lacking that dark mass when compared to the others since that indicates a clear or egg that never developped. I would not go by veining.
