(Cool, people are coming back to this thread, lets try to get this thing 'roleing'
again!)
As Phil and Avis raced into the main office where Dirk was, he let out a shout of joy. "YES! I've got a dial tone! The land-line phones work!" He immediately punched 9-1-1 on the button pad, then stood there impatiently as he waited for an answer. "Come on, come on,
come on..." Phil mumbled with his fingers crossed. Dirk waited through five excruicating rings before he finally heard what he had been hoping for. "9-1-1, what is your emergency?" came a woman's voice. Dirk nearly shouted into the mouth piece, but managed to restrain himself and start speaking. "Listen, I don't know exactly what's going on, but my entire high school is stuck on an island and really wierd things are starting to happen to a lot of us." "Okay, try to calm down, sir. Take a few deep breaths, then tell me where you are and what's going on." Dirk paused for a moment, taking several long breaths, then continued. "I don't know just what is happening, but I don't think that there is anyone else still on the island except for the highschool students, and there is some kind of force field or something around the island that we can't get through. Some really wierd things are starting to happen to some of us as well, and we need help as quick as you can get it here. Please, send somebody,
anybody, to Mt. Desert Isla..." Dirk was cut off mid-sentence by the roar of a lightning strike. He hollered in pain, covering his open ear with his free hand as the boom of the thunder assaulted his ears. After about a minute, his ears stopped ringing and he looked for Avis and Phil, thankfully noticing that they were still there. He then tried to keep talking to the operator. "Sorry, but did you hear me? Mt. Desert Island in Maine. Hello...
Hello?!" He now realized that the line was stone-dead, and there was nothing, not even static, coming through. He slapped the hang-up trigger and tried dailing the phone again, but still nothing. Frustrated, he slamed the phone onto the reciever, not noticing that in the process he actually bent the metal cut-off trigger and cracked the plastic phone itself.
"Line just went dead," he said to Avis and Phil, "nothing there at all, not even static, just complete silence." He turned towards the window next to him and gazed out into the now steady rain and wind, when something bright caught his eye for a split second. There it was again. Something outside was periodically sparkling with a surprising brightness. Dirk looked harder and noticed that a large limb from
Old Ironsides had just snapped off and was lying on top of the now-completely-severed phone lines. "Son of a *****!!!" he shouted, "the friggin lightning hit
Ironsides and broke a branch off that snapped the phone lines for the whole campus! @#$%!!!" He very quickly noticed that he was about to completely loose his temper, so he closed his eyes and breathed slowly for a moment. Then he turned to the others and said "Come on, let's get back to the others. We'll have to head into one of the towns if we want to try again with the phones. You guys need any help carrying that stuff?" Phil handed Dirk one of the flak-jackets and
Beatrice and they started heading back to the main school building, Dirk still noticably frustrated.
