Genetics category?

Nifty-Chicken: Not having a specific place to post genetic questions and comments is bugging me. If it's not possible to have a specific genetics category, can't we get a title clarification so people know where to post genetic entries. Just today for instance, I found a terrific question re breeding Marans posted under Breeders and Backyard Hatcheries. Genetic questions are all over the place.

If it's not possible to have a separate category, can't you just make it a little easier for those of us who are interested in such things to know where to go...

I have to agree with Michele. Right now, it looks like the "breeds in general" and "everything else chicken" (and sometimes "breeders and backyard hatcheries") categories tend to be the most commonly used areas for such questions, but they end up in several different places and they can get lost in the shuffle among more basic types of questions re: breeds. To me, "breeds" and "breeding" can be different areas of interest. For instance, someone wanting to know the difference between Barred Rocks and Dominiques would post to "breeds in general," as would someone wanting to know about RIR temperament or what bird would be best for a suburban yard. But someone asking how to make a silver/gold sexlink or how to get better barring in their BRs is asking a question about breed-ing and genetics, so it would seem to me that the category could be split. If "genetics" per se is too narrow, how about "breeding and genetics"? Or "breeding, standards, and genetics"? Something like that? If it's a no-go, that's fine, but it seems there's a ton of interest in breeding to standard on the board and that always involves genetics one way or another

Thanks everyone for the great discussion, suggestions and feedback. For now we're going to include the "genetics" in the breeds section. The name of this section now is "Breeds & Genetics".

If we see a lot of genetic posts that warrant dividing the section into two we'll do so. Until that time please post all genetic topics in this new "Breeds & Genetics" section.

Also, if you see threads on genetics please click the report link on the thread / post and simply let us know that it needs to be moved and we'll do it.

Thanks so much!

Thanks seriousbill for expounding on my post and giving a good explanation of what should, technically, be two separate categories. I'm glad Nifty saw the merit of our ideas.

Thanks Nifty!! I think it helps make the forum more user-friendly.

Nifty saw the merits of splitting and adding to the forum for ages actually. Discussion of things like this is always an ongoing process.

It has been more a matter of time and planning of restructuring that has been the issue. There are a number of extended plans for this forum I am sure the members will enjoy as they develop.

So stay tuned folks.
