Wheaten is an allele at the e-locus. There can be lots of other genes involved in colours. RIR, Light Sussex, Wheaten Marans, Salmon Faverolles, Buff Orpingtons are all wheaten birds. A wheaten Marans, for instance, is the basic wheaten colour hen without extra, non mutant, plumage genes.
