You are going to have to out cross to another breed (OEGB) to get a brown red rosecomb (RC). A person could test cross black RC and determine if they contained the birchen gene but that would take too much time. The large white ear lobes on the RC would be the only major problem with out crossing to OEGB.
You would have to use a brown red OEGB on a female black RC ( these are easiest to find) or better yet a black breasted red . Then cross the offspring and you should get some brown reds. A person will have to hatch 30 or more offspring. Look for adult birds that have some lacing on the breast-they are birchen for sure. The birchens will also be crow winged.
