Genetics type of question...

If it looks like a mallard and quacks like a mallard...

and they do.

I agree that if you want more RIR type chicken just keep breeding them back to a RIR roo or buy some RIR, but it sounds like they're serving they're purpose. They could also be some other "red" semi-commercial strain of brown egg layers. Egghead- we need some of those cream legbars here in the US, I've always had a thing for crele roos

. Back to OP- you might have gotten mallards depending on your state, I don't think federal governs them anymore and NONE of the hatcherys have the "check with your state" or "requires so and so permit" note by them, and I know most of them sell mallards, I maybe wrong but I'm with you on the guess. They could possibly even be rouen, mallard hybrid which would make them, not mallards. Anything is possible I've seen eastern strain wild turkeys sold as run of the mill domestic bronze at local auctions and the authorities are none the wiser.

But, depending on breeding a Call, Australian Spotted, Mallard and Rouen can all look very much the same.

A rough weight of hatchery stock that I have seen and weighed out.

Call 1.75 - 2.75 pounds
Australian Spotted 2.50 - 3 pounds
Mallard 2.50 - 3.5 pounds
Rouen 4 - 8 pounds
