Genotypes

Yes, I was figuring that. I guess that is why the guy who originally bred the red mottled Houdans used the RIR. Perhaps I will start with an easier color project like blue mottled Houdans, I figure that would be fairly easy using a blue Andalusian.

Would you have any idea what colors I would get crossing a Silver Gray Dorking with a Black Mottled Houdan?

That makes sense, then if I bred one of the blacks back to a mottled I should get 50% mottled and 50% black.

If I bred the black offspring together I should get 25% mottled, 50% black and 25% silver gray? Could I get a silver gray Houdan of sorts?

A bit more complicated than that. Breeding the offspring together, all things being equal, you'd get about 25% mottled (& the known preportions of heterozygous & homozygous not mottled) but the mottled offspring wouldn't necessarily all be mottled on black birds. The approx 25% e+ birds have the same probability as the others of inherting two mottling genes. Also one cannot really tell whether gold or silver is under the black though one might expect it to be silver. This will affect the colour of the 25% e+ offspring.

I have read the thread and I am not sure what you want to produce. Are you are wanting to make a different variety of houdan or a different variety of dorking.

That is true, I would get some mottled silver duckwing, assuming the black mottles carried silver and not gold which from what I have seen I think they do.

Tim, I started this threat looking to make different varieties of Houdans, mainly red and blue mottled. Trying to find the best breed both in type and color to use.

For the blue mottled, I would start by crossing a houdan with a white crested blue polish.

For the red houdan I would start by crossing the houdan with a rhode island red. I would use a rhode island red because they carry the mahogany gene and that would make for a dark red bird. If you want a buff bird use a gold laced polish.

What causes the white crests on the polish? What would their genotype be?

I was thinking about using blue Andalusian mainly because their size and because I did not know what the white crested on the blue Polish would do.
