Runner ducks.
gotta be quite![]()
Docile,but not a big heavy breed.But not small either.very nice,calm ducks,but can be loud.
But aren't Pekins noisy?!!My Pekin (girl) is super mellow with all the other ducks. She weighs double or more what any of my other ducks weigh and she doesn't peck anyone (no one pecks her either because they aren't crazy). My Cayuga is super sweet with us, but she pecks all the other ducks (except the Pekin). But I don't have many repeats (mixed flock) so I don't know what is individual personality and what is breed temperament. I know I have read about Pekin Drakes being difficult, but Drakes are difficult to start with and double size probably doesn't help there. Here is a picture of my Pekin chillin' with 3 of my 4 runners and my Welsh Harlequin by the fire pit.![]()
My runners are much noiser than my Pekin. If she would quack, she could be real loud (My WH is real loud), but she just talks and mutters so she is one of my quieter ducks.
Here is my ducks noise making - your mileage may vary...
Runners - wake me up every morning when they get out of their house. First to quack at everything. Gab on and on at everything. (pretty funny)
Welsh Harlequin - Rouens - Tied for second. They do the 3 quack alarm fairly frequently at cats, leaves blowing, magpies... what ever.
Cayuga - mostly just talks. Quacks occasionally.
Swedish - talk - never quack.
Pekin - mutters to herself and talks - never quacks.
Drakes - My Rouen quacks All the time my White Crested quacks sometimes, but they don't count because they sound like someone shoved a kazoo down their throats and aren't very loud.
Again, I don't have a big enough sample to tell what is breed and what is personality. If my Pekin wanted to quack, she could probably be as loud as my WH or Rouens or runners. All of them can quack pretty impressively. My Pekin was by FAR the loudest peeper in the brooder (split your skull loud), then her voice cracked when she started getting feathers and she peep/Quacked about 5 times then never quacked again. She just talks and mutters. Here is an example: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/963655/snow-learning-speak
