German New Hampshire

I think they are beautiful birds, too. So glad they are turning out nice.

Kathy,

I love mine from jeremy Woeppel...he has your gorgeous male and put over the GS amer. females...he hatched 60 pullets and culled down to 12. I have 1 real nice pullet from my hatch of 27 and 2 nice males...1 is real nice...going to try to get some photos this week to post. I am getting 2 more females from Jeremy this next week. I am taking a few NH's to the Tucson show end of November. These birds are the total package...beauty, size, and production. Everyone is pleased with them it seems.
Hope you are well and glad to see you posting on here

Question for the breeders/showers. Anyone wanting to sell some that don't quite meet your expectations to someone who wants them for eggs? Or can you tell me where close to Atlanta, MI 49709 (Upper lower Penn) there is a breeder. I already went the route of adopting from a moving friend that was told New Hampshire but they came from the hatchery... They are not.

I have one rooster (my icon) and two hens. Pretty sure are Production Reds. He is active and I need more chickens. So I thought maybe someone with not up to breeding standards might sell me one reasonably.

Later I want to help with single breed type. Especially if someone has free ranging flock. Once I can afford to or these 'not pure breeds' get too old to lay I will go for pure. Then will introduce a pure rooster.

My income is very limited but would like to get into the breed preservation too. For now want to use "imperfect" (to breeders) but healthy for eggs to eat.

I would love to help you out but since I am in Arkansas I am to far. Maybe someone will come on board to help you. I am sure you will love these NH great birds.

Thank you,
I got one German Rooster from Steven and 3 hens, he said from someone, who got his strain long time ago from Halbach. This 2 boys and the girls are from that mix. I still have the German roo and one of the original hens. Do you think, I should go back to parents? German roo is very big, but has some feathers on the legs and white tail feather, Halbach hen has nice shape, but very, very small.
Young boys and the girls are very big, almost like my Rocks, no white feathers. Only one of the boys has some feathers on the legs, but I can take it.Each boy is only half brother to some of the girls.
Will appreciate any advise.

I might would go back with the hen(if she has no stubs) with one of the boys but the male that has the stubs? I'd steer away from, esp if his offspring(the two other males) do'n't have the stubs. No need introducing more of something else to cull for in the future offsprings. Those boys you posted will get bigger in time they are still young. I have one that is a 11/2 he is still growing and looks better everyday. Not that I'd use him as breeder for forwarding his genes but he would sure look good in someones layer or backyard pen though.

Here's the top male of what I hatched in late Feb. 2013 (almost 8 months) from 2 dozen eggs from Jeremy/XW. These are the F1 cross of Kathy Bonham's German male over Good Shepherd American females. Here's the "Clint Eastwood" critique

based on the SOP.

The "Good":
I like his temperament alot. I also like his head and comb is decent too. He's a big boy and has a good station. No stubs on feet or shanks. He's solid---had plenty of meat on him since 4 months of age...think *fryer*. He's not browned out. His tail and wing (not shown) black points are correct. He's fertile with some F2's in the incubator.

The "Bad & Ugly":

His wing and top saddle color is too dark...overall need more orange and less fire red. His tail angle is too low. His width through the back toward the tail could be wider.

Guess I will be practicing the 'ol "Start where you are with what you got" modicum from Sturgeon for the F2's this year at least. My partner is not willing to cull this male and get another at this point in time. I can't keep males on my property currently...sooooooo, I will need to use this male for the time being.

The F2's are on day 10...the 'lucky 7' are developing well. Plus a 'heritage black sex link' thrown in for good measure....LOL
