German New Hampshire

I haven't been on in quite a while. This past weekend I attended my first ever poultry show in Jennings, LA and entered three birds: A German New Hampshire Cock bird, a White Laced Red Cornish Cockeral, and a Red Dorking Cockeral.

I wasn't sure what to expect, since I am still relatively new to evaluating poultry. Plus, my buddy Chris Herzog was going and taking his show winning Mohawk RIR and Good Shepherd Barred Rocks.

I had three GNH boys to choose from, but the oldest one was by far the widest with the best leg color so I took him: He is a VERY large guy and I call him Oden. He is from the ONLY egg that hatched from an order I purchased from a BYC member called T.E.R.

Here is a photo of him stealing food from the duck feeders earlier this spring.

It wasn't a very big show and was mostly bantams, but the fella above won the American Class and Reserve Champion Large fowl (My other two enteries won champion and reserve in the English class as well). I was very pleased with how well he did. I have hatched nearly 16 chicks out of him and my best hens so far this year and the juveniles are looking pretty good so far.

Here he is next to Chris's Barred Rock Cock bird when we cooped in at the show Saturday.

Lol, that's what it all about! For me anyway!!!
I spend hours looking at the chicks i'm growing out wondering if I'm making the right choices with my breeders. I can't wait to see what I'll have in a few months!

Sweet deal and glad to see one of those "orange" chickens at the top of the heap again, I think there will be more of them to come in the future of showing as this breed has surely spread in population and interest as of late.

Chris you got one-uped huh? well at least you know where the bird(or its forefathers) that beat you came from huh,LOL

Good day

I'll let Rhonda have this one this time but I have a few birds of my own that I'm growing out for this years as well. Next time, she had better bring her "A game", No more free rides at our local shows for her anymore!!! LOL! Heck man she has the same Reds that I have, the same Barred Rocks that I have and the same New Hampshires that I have.....I had better bring my "A Game"!!!!

Yes sir....keep on your toes! Actually, I have 3 lines of the Barred Rocks and 3 lines of the New Hampshires too! At least I don't have any bantams...so you are safe there and you don't have any Cornish....yet.

BTW...you should show off your new little New Hampshire family: Somebody got himself a nice group of bantam New Hampshires last week!

Congrats...looks like a real nice male...and perhaps he's prepotent too...time will tell...must be fun watching his chicks grow. would love to see pics if you get a chance.

I'll see if I can get any good pics of his offspring. It is dark and stormy out right now, so I'll give it a go once the sun peaks out a bit. I went and sat down to watch them yesterday. It looks like only two are going to have to be culled due to pinched tails out of 10. The rest have tail feathers coming in that look like an upside down U on the males and a nice open teepee on the females. Also, each and every one of them has really nice beak and leg coloration. I think he is going to have to go back into the breeding pen pretty soon!

I also bred one of the cockerals I got from Chris to the same group of hens, but those chicks are much younger, so I will have to wait to check how they feather out.
