Wow, those are Beautiful New Hampshires. He looks so clever!I thought I would post a photo of our New Hampshire Rooster "Big John". We had a surplus of roosters and the final rooster we retained was to be Big John. I culled heavily on temperament coupled with looks, correctness/size and fullness. The winner was "Big John". Three of my roosters went to farms that are using Good Shepherd New Hampshire stock. These folks were not familiar with the German New Hampshires. I had the roosters at a swap meet and they asked if they would make a good cross. I said they would make a superior cross especially since they are both heritage birds. So now two breeders of Good Shepherd New Hampshires are now using German New Hamphires.
Anyway attached is a photo of Big John with the flock. The chickens are loose outside playing and he is currently with several breeds. That is why I need good temperament because I keep the flock together most of the year. Bad and "fowl" behavior is not tolerated and Big John is of excellent temperament.
This stock originated from Kathy. THANK YOU KATHY!

I just joined BYC today, after completing the construction of my chicken coop. I'm soooooooo ready to purchase my first German line New Hampshires chicks (or mature hens) ... so this is one of the threads I will be frequenting to get more info from all of you 'experts' for this breed!
Well Chris, I can say this much, I don't have to worry about what roo I'm going to use If I raise any of these this year. Everyone of the males had white in their tails except one. He's not the nicest one overall but there is no way that I am starting out with one with white in his tail. I only ended up with 2 hens. So if I raise any of these this year it will be quite the job. lolHey guys/gals,
Just bringing this back up to the top to see if anyone has anything worth talking about....been dead on this thread for a while now!
As for me I'm down to my best three males and seven total, hens and pullets. This week I'm going to pick which hen/pullet will go with which male and breed these six birds for my new crop of chicks to raise for next year. I'm kind of excited to see what I end up with and if I'll have anything to show for next year from these pairings.
Chris
