German New Hampshire

It seems to me that Mr. Mongold was here recruiting for folks to join the newly formed New Hampshire Club.
We never did get our questions answered when we did ask. We hear he is the expert with New Hampshires........
I would love to see pictures too.

AND...... WHERE are all those fabulous American New Hampshires, that we all hear about, hiding?The photos HERE are from like 2003 ! Really? Really, is that it???? Most of those are just bantams, too. Where are the large fowl New Hamps?

I have 4 of American New Hampshires that I hatched from Lotsofpaints. They are two months old now. I think that they are growing nicely. Also have German Hampshires from Hillbilly Hen. They are a few weeks older than the Americans, and I like them a lot. I have a cockerel from each strain. Yay!

Also look at how close this Good Shepard Roo looks when compared to the pic Kathy posted (that came from Bob)



And one of mine....


The color of my bird might be closer in color to the current SOP pic than to the pic the Bob had but the Good Shepard bird to me looks closer to the pic that Bob has. It may just be the way that the sun light is shining on my bird idk but still interesting.

The second picture may be a Shilling painting, probably is but I don't think it was ever used in the Standard. As far as I know Shilling did only black & white illustrations in the Standard.
Someone back a few posts said there were going to start being more concerned with colour than with improving their tail angle. Don't! Remember that "build the barn before you paint it" thing.

My last hatch for the New Hampshire's this year. I did the buy-it-now with Banjo and got 2 sets of 6 eggs each. He sent me 8 eggs in first bunch and 9 eggs a week later in the second bunch. 7 of each group make it to lock down and 6 from each group hatched. Not bad when I paid for 12 eggs and end up with 12 little yeepers. lol Now that is what I call good odds. As of right now I have 10 really nice New Hampshire chicks from Luanne that are a little over 2 months and 12 from Banjo that are 1 week and new borns. lol I'm sure that I will get enough of each sex to have a good start for next year. The last of this group hatched through the night last night.


Within 2-3 minutes of putting them in brooder, a couple were already running to get into feeder. lol



These sure are some healthy happy little creatures. Thanks so much Banjo for selling me the two groups. I sure do appreciate that. Now the hard part, raising and culling/keeping the right ones.

I love New Hampshires! I tend to drift back and forth between different breeds of chickens. It seems that you got to try every breed available, but I always come back to this breed.

Farmerboy, I believe those are the original Standard pictures and that is what a New Hampshire should really look like. The other picture that is evidently in the standard now seems to be a copy of those pictures with a severe color change.

No kidding....it looks like the same birds just orange in the SOP.

Yeah that's the old picture from way back before the one now was redone in the SOP its fuzzy looking but I've seen better examples of it too. Some of the hatcheries back in the eighties used to use it for their pics in their sales brochures. I think if you go back to the early eighties and beyond SOP these are the pics used I guess back till they were Black and White (which I'd get more out of than the pumpkin colored one of today). I'm sorry, it's a sorry excuse for a picture esp in something as important as the SOP IT'S A BOOK WHICH IS USED TO JUDGE BY and should be more clear in its on-goings for sure. Oh by the way look at that female what does she look like, almost identical to the GNH color HUH? Somethings fishy here and I want clearer understanding on such stuff. Why did Mr. Mongould have the painting changed to BUFF(orange) whatever color they are, to match his color he created when making his bantams HUH? the colors described in the SOP (and I'm sure they haven't been tainted since the 40's when the NH came about) DON"T match the picture in the book. I'm sorry but I'm not illiterate(can't type worth a hooey but....) or color blind either. Its got to be political somehow (It just smells fishy to me). Also too I've gathered this from more than one higher official on these German NH's, there seems to be some tone (something against) going across the pond to get them. Well if they don't like them get to spreading the word or better yet get the product (American NH) out there for people to be able to have and see.
I know I come across as an S.O.B. sometimes, yep especially if its something/subject I care for and have a desire and passion about. (straight shootin' and no beating around the bush)

Jeff, you said they changed the photo to the ridiculous orange they have now. SO my question is, how far back do I have to go to find an SOP with the older picture. I'm going to use it as my guide. I think the new picture is totally outrageous, I mean come on the pullet looks like a goldfish with a beak.

If I am satisfied with tail angle and type in my breeder pens, what should I look for in matings now?

Not saying all my pens are to my satisfaction yet, but I do have one pen I am pretty happy with the type in. Now, on to painting the barn..... Can you help?

This color thing has me confused. It seems to me, the SOP verbiage is what I should pay attention to.
However, as Matt mentioned, those orange blobs in the photo section were approved by the SOP committee.

One thing in particular, I am wondering about is the female's neck......
There is nothing saying how dark, how many rows, etc. So, does this mean it is open for the interpretation of each judge?
