Oh your poor wife.

I would be devastated if I had to shoot a dog, which I would do if I found one attacking my chickens...sad and angry and guilty feeling all rolled up together. So unfair to your wife...the dogs...the chickens

I find that odd on this board, the way that threads are closed. I've been moderator on 5 different forums and am a member of a dozen others. I've never seen threads closed for anything other than flagrant violations and attacks. It takes some getting used to for a poster to say "I want this forum closed" and have it closed

I'd leave it other. There is a lot to be learned from others' experiences. If it helps even one person decide and plan for an attack on their flock, then is well-worth leaving it open.

I've been a moderator on a few boards also, and trust that the moderators will take all things under consideration, and communicate wisely among themselves in weighing the value of keeping or closing this thread. If we're collecting votes on the subject, I beleive that leaving it open and monitoring it is a healthy way to go. No one whom is posting here has suggested hunting down to kill just for the sake of playing games. nor is anyone advocating torturing in any manner. We are simply on both ends of the fence (so to speak) on what we would do regarding different situations.

I'd like to pose a question: If ANY aggressive animal were to put a loved one in danger, and if you had a weapon, would you use it? If you were out of your car, walking towards your home, (with young child nearby) and the same situation rose up, what would you do? A few might choose to shoot over the heads of animals, who knows when really under the pressure.

Would I? No, but for a different reason....I have neighbors fairly close by and really don't want to take a chance of shooting them. Wait, take that back. I'd wait until I could shoot, but aim downwards first, then finish the job so that it wouldn't suffer. If I lived on more property, and if my chickens were enclosed and something tried or was successful at breaching this, yes I'd shoot. I'd warn my neighbors ahead of time that I'd do this first, along with the fact that I AM a very, very good shot and would try to aim not to inflict pain.

I have a friend whom is licenced to keep wild animals and those which are overflows from zoos/circus' or taken from private homes. Some are pretty tamed, including a lion. He's a big baby. But part of her licence is to be open for inspection on care and keeping all safe and safely away from outside her facility. If this lion escapes, if he panicks and is hungry, whom is responsible for any damages?

If MY dogs go after something outside of my yard, I am libel. Nothing is going to change that. I cannot blame anyone else for protecting what is theirs. I cannot point the finger at anyone else for being the bad guy.

The OP has mentioned at least twice about closing this thread, hence my statement I made in a post above:

fc, if you ever want a thread of yours closed, just hit the report button on the first post and ask that it be closed by the first moderator available and he/she will assess the situation.

We are not leaving it open for discussion as to whether or not this thread stays open so let's not have anymore discussion about that.​

I feel very lucky myself that I haven't had to resort to this so far. I did have some pit bulls that visited dangerously close about once a week, but one day I decided while they were on one of their outings to practice loading and unloading (safely, w/out firing) my new 12ga pump shotgun. Strange thing, I haven't seen those dogs out since. And it's been months and months now.

I think the mods on this site are awsome! I'm on a few others and this site is very well moderated inmo.

Your wife did a good job. I to have had to shoot at a dog trying to kill my chickens before. My fence held though. (Darn thing should after all the work we put into it) But the dog started after my sister... so I shot... and missed! And it was my trusty 1911 .45. He ran off about 20 yards then just barked and growled at us. Horrible dog. He came over offten and tried to kill our cats also. An it wasn't the first time he'd tried for the chickens. I'm glad my neighbors got rid of him.
Tell your wife she did a good job. I know how scary a really aggressive prey driven dog is!

Luckily, I have never been in the situation to have to kill anything. I would if I had to though.

I got to thinking- our critters rely on us to protect them. Who else will do it?

I got back from an Army conference and saw the formerly proud Welsumer rooster. All his tail feathers are gone. He limps, and sometimes falls when he walks. He fell off the run up into the coop. He has teeth marks in his comb. I don't see any overt fractures. I sure hope he gets better. He's so pitiful!

A big, dumb chocolate lab runs the 'hood sometimes, and comes on my property. It just wants to say hi, I guess, and so far has not been threatening. I haven't seen it since I shot a shotgun in the air. Low speed pellets did not seem to convey the message.
