Get rid of 1st egg?

Discussion in 'Chicken Behaviors and Egglaying' started by TXmama3boys, Mar 9, 2015.

  1. Hello! This is our first time at chickens. Ours are around 12 weeks right now. While at TSC today, a man said, "You know you need to throw out th 1st egg your chickens lay, right?" Is this true?

No, there is no reason not to eat the first eggs. It is not unusual for new layers to lay odd eggs when they first start laying (occasional eggs with no yolks, double yolks etc) but they are fine to eat. Though a lot of people do keep those first eggs and make ornaments out of them or something :)
