Get Your Buckets Ready! It's That Time of Year Again!

No berries around here...I did go cherry picking recently, and we have a single grapevine and I've been feeding some immature grapes to the chickens. But I do miss blueberry picking in the UP, MI.

My parents have about a dozen blueberry bushes, totally covered with un ripe berries. Should be ready in a few weeks, just in time for the new owners of their house to enjoy.

It sure is! My favorite rides is when you spend the majority of the times doing circles after you realized you passed a huge blackberry patch. This was last Thursday:

Some of the best black berries are located beside a road. All the traffic must keep the birds and bugs away.

Hubbo makes all kinds. We have the muscadines and the scuppernogs growing in the yard, along with the grapes. Also the peach and the apples! But my favorite that he makes is black cherry. It's from a kit.

I have already picked 3 quarts of black raspberries from the bushes in my yard. Would have had much more but had to share some with the wild birds and my chickies. While mowing the yard today I had a chance to look at my blackberries. There are a few turning and a WHOLE lot on the vines. Can't wait to go down to the river a few miles from here. The red raspberries hang down in huge clumps from the hillside. Got buckes last year. Looks good again for this year. We're getting ready to leave for a week on vacation so I will hitting the berry patch as soon as we get back. Yum!

BTW My secret tool for picking those high up or far to reach berries: a blue reacher tool from Harbor Freight. I paid maybe $3 for it. It's blue plastic with a handle that squeezes so you can grab things. It actually can pick a berry without squeezing it to mush.
