so here we go! we start construction on the coop today. we're using pallets (yes we're doing this on the "cheep") we have a salvaged screen door, which is pretty cool, and a bucket of mis-tint paint (don't know why the didn't want it it's a beautiful color!). anyway wish us luck! we've been happily married for almost 12 yrs, i have a feeling this will be our first real test!![IMG] we'll post pics as we go!

    total cost so far $25.

edit: new pics of progress below at post #10

Have a grea time building your coop. It's so exciting to see it progress and even more exciting when you can put your flock into it. Have a blessed time!

How did it go? We need to build a coop cheaply, too, so would love to know! [IMG]

Well, we got them into a better 'temporary housing' ~ barbed wire under our deck (and a wire dog crate to lock them in at night with overhanging wood above it and a perch). They seem happy and have laid 4 eggs in four days, so we are encouraged! I know one pest I will not worry about... our scrawny cat ~ I checked on the hens and found the cat had gotten out our slider screen and was in the cage/crate. The hens (who each definitely outweigh the cat) wear standing at the door to the crate. The kitty looked puffy and alarmed. She was ever so delighted to flee when the chance finally came! Hahaha... I laughed so hard! [IMG]
