Getting a little nervous.

I have 4 silkie eggs in the Incubator and on late day 18 one started to pip. It's been almost 20 hours later and the crack on the egg has not changed. Although, the eggs moves a little off and on. Is this normal or is something going wrong. Incubator is at 68% humidity, Temp 101 had to set higher because mercury thermometers inside read lower than the actual reading on digital thermostat. This incubator I have has about as many temperature variations as the entire United states has from coast to coast. In the corners it reads 98 and in the middle under the heater it can get to 102. Just have to find a happy medium and place the eggs on the tray.

Just be patient even though you can't see progress it is happening. You chick is slowly turning in the shell having tiny neck contractions chipping away on the inside as it turns. It will take alot of rest breaks during the process. If you really get fidgety and would like to encourage the chick lighty tap your incubator now and then and play hen sounds nearby even the sound of other chicks will stimulate the baby.

Keep us updated on your hatch, humidity and temp are at a perfect level. Soon you will see the chick zipping through the egg and it will eventually split.

Going to try the hen sounds, will play youtube to let little silkie hear the noise.

How are things going?

So far seeing more movement, little baby is getting more active. My wife watched the first hatch and we only had one little baby hatch. It is a black silkie about 9 weeks old now and it follows my wife around the house it literally thinks she is its momma. Pour little chick is so attached to us it has become her little pet. it actually is still in the house with us and follows her in the house. We have tried to get it in the coop with the older silkies and the pecking order starts despite us trying to isolate the chick in the holding cage the little chick is scared to death. When we step away from the coop it cries for my wife and she can't help but let it come back out and follow her back to the house. Hopefully with this hatch we can get the 9 week old to bond with these chicks and go from there.
