Getting baby chicks for show!

Hello everyone! I'm a young 4-Her from Ohio. I'm going to buy some baby d'uccles, hopefully soon, so they can become show birds. I made this thread to put updates of the chicks on. I am getting 2 Porcelain d'Uccles and 2 Mille Fleur d"Uccles. They're coming in straight run from Meyer hatchery. I hope people stick around for the chance to see the chicks!!

Congrats! Will these be birds you want to show in APA and ABA sanctioned shows? If so, I'd avoid getting them from a hatchery because they will not be competitive.

If they're for 4H shows only, I'm not sure how those are judged, so hatchery stock may be okay and competitive in that realm

yeah tbh most of our birds come from hatcheries but are show quality, such as my australorps last year and my best friend's silkies

So then it sounds like the 4H shows are a little different than APA and ABA shows, good to know

I only wanted to bring it up to you because at my last APA/ABA sanctioned show, someone did try to enter a buff orpington from a hatchery and the judge didn't even bother ranking it, they just wrote 'Production' on the card and left it at that. I didn't want that to happen to you, haha.

Yeah my group pays extra money to get show quality birds from a good hatchery. Last year we came in 1st for juniors, (can't remember what the middle group is called), and seniors!

I have to get my show birds before May! Time is ticking!

Guys when should I get them? I 100% have to get them before the end of May! Should I wait last minute so they look younger, and otherwise healthier? Or should I get them soon so they are mature, match the breeds requirements, and are easier to handle? Please suggest which one I should do!

@21hens-incharge I've decided to get them early so they're more mature and hopefully calmer. Don't want them flying away on me!
