After giving up my flock about 10 years ago when my husband became ill, I am so ready to have chickens again. I just love them! I suddenly inherited 8 hens from a neighboring farmer and am thrilled. I live on our family farm, which has been in the Butler family for over 100 years. I am now a widow, there are no longer any livestock just fields of crops and some beautiful Leghorn, Americana and Rhode Island Red hens. I hope to add a couple more chicks shortly but plan to stay at no more than 10. I have bred, trained, showed and done search & rescue with Newfoundland dogs since about 1972; I currently have one 11 year old Landseer named Destiny who is my best bud. She was a puppy when I had chickens before and she still remembers and loves them. She thinks they are her little birds and must be protected and guarded. Destiny is a retired water rescue dog as well as my retired service dog. My husband had 7 children, and as a step mom I cannot be more proud. There are now 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren to this "flock". So many of them are able to come to the farm each summer when we have our annual family reunion. Where it was once the grandkids who came, it is now the GREAT grandkids - and how these kids will love seeing the chickens. We renovated our barn last year and had a special loft constructed so the kids can hang out and camp there with their siblings and friends. I am so blessed!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

I'm sorry for your loss. :hugs

Your place sure sounds great. If you don't mind, we'd love to see a picture or more of your chickens and whatever animals you wish. :)

We're glad you're here!

Congratulations on the great rural life you and Destiny are enjoying! Landseers are such beautiful dogs -- all that size and incredible markings, too.

I hope when you get additional chickens, you'll let us know. I'm sure you're right that the youngest family members will be thrilled with fuzzy chicks. 🐥

Welcome to BYC!
