Getting chickens

Hiya, Mary, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Here's our Coop forum if you haven't decided what to build yet.

For now, you could get an old doghouse, attach a 1/2" HWC pen to it, and voila, temp coop. We have two "mini coops" like that, and one's a cute little shed we found. That's in addition to 2 regular/breeding coops. The only issue is if they start laying eggs in a doghouse, we use a litter picker-upper to get them. One, hubby made the front panel on hinges to swing up, and the other he made a door.

Hello Mary, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Not only would I not purchase a pre-fab coop, I would not purchase a pre-owned pre-fab coop!

Try converting even part of an existing shed into a temporary coop until you can get them a proper structure.

So excited I'm finally getting a few chickens after many years of wanting to. Can anyone recommend a cheap and quick alternative to a true coop? My husband and I will be building one but I would like to purchase some hens before we get a chance to do this. Thanks in advance.
Welcome and congrats on taking the leap into chicken raising! It is a joy - they are delightful animals and we love them. They’re also work, though! Not as easy as some would have you believe. There’s lots to learn. One thing we’ve learned is that chickens, like most animals, are creatures of habit and prefer routine, meaning that changing up their environment after they’ve gotten used to it can be quite stressful for them. And us! They get especially attached to their coop if they’ve spent enough time there and have started laying eggs in it. It’s their safe place. For that reason, you may want to consider getting the coop you intend them to ultimately live in set up first then getting the chickens. I know it means waiting longer for them, but it could save a lot of energy and anxiety transferring them later. People do change coops - and even completely relocate with chickens - but if you’re able to get their permanent home ready first, I’d recommend it. Best of luck and welcome again!

Hello! Welcome to.BYC! I agree with everyone that recommends staying away from pre fab coops. Cheap materials an cheaply made! They wouldn`t last long! Best of luck to you when you can get some birds! 😊
