Hey,

I am getting 25 chicks and I am wondering how big my brooder should be? I order some different breeds and I am wondering on there compatibility? I got 5 Polish Golden Laced, 5 Buff Orpintons, 5 Ameraucana, 5 New Hampshire and 5 Black Cochin. I probaly should have ask this first but I don't want my chickens to come when it is to cold the. the chicks should come next Friday maybe the next so it would be nice to know ASAP

Here's the recommended space requirements for chicks in a brooder:

Up to 2 weeks: 0.5 sq ft per chick
2-4 weeks: 1 sq ft per chick
4-8 weeks: 2.5 sq ft per chick
over 8 weeks: 4 sq ft per chick

It isn't always possible to provide as much space, but use that as a guide and try and get as close as possible to it and you'll be fine. Enjoy your chicks!

Thanks, sumi

I am going to build a box the size of a twin bed and use that for the first 2-3 weeks inside. Then I will do something biger in the insalated heated coop and keep them in there until they can go outside.
Thanks,
