Getting rid of mites or lice.....

Wes, I'm disappointed. You didn't mention Eprinex. I'm a firm believer in its ability to treat mites and internal parasites now after trying it last month.

I've talked to our state vet, he told me that off label use on backyard flocks is OK with them. Our birds are not going into the general food supply so is not an issue for causing health problems with the public.

The thing I hate about Frontline is the sweet scent, it irritates my nose so I have a tough time thinking that it wouldn't bother the heck out of the flock with all of the flowery scent in the coop.

I did quite a bit of research on this for another club (on the frontline ingredient and birds)...I cant easily go and retrieve that info without a lot of work, but my own personal conclusion afterwards is that I would not be using it on my birds...the ivermectin type mentioned by Robin (the ivomec eprinex specifically and only that form of ivermectin) has been used with great success and safety on poultry ... see this article (and note that the "spot-on" method is advised topically ... not in the water)

We know we have a moderate lice problem, according to the vet. We're getting ready to catch them all for vaccinations in the next few weeks. Would it work if we just dusted each one individually (manually) with DE, when we vaccinate them, as well as putting it in their dusting areas? I want to make sure they all get treated. We're going to try the wood ashes in the meantime.

hi i use the adams flea and tick spray works really good for mites and i also use the seven dust in their dusting hole both of these keeps the mites, lice and even fleas away i use these all the time

Sorry Robin but at the time I was more concerned with the frontline use and the chickendoctors recommendation, although I have corresponded with a real vet that post on another board and ezBYC from time to time about frontline and she said she has NO problems at all with using frontline on her on birds but would never offer it to her customer even as extralable use. Heck Australia was consider banning the use of Fiprinol(sp) in that country a couple years ago.

I agree thought that Eprinex works wonders and I love the stuff.

I to use Adams flea and tick from time to time because the active ingrediant is the natural version of the only synthetic product approved in most states for use on birds. That doesn't meant it isn't harmfull just means I trust it more that Carbyl and some of the other things out there.

chicknmania Frontline isn't approved because the company hasn't put forth the money or the effort to do the studies to get it approved. Remember chickens (according to big buisness) "here today gone tomorrow" animals and they believe it isn't cost effective to do the research for an animal that is only here, in the case of broilers 6-8 weeks and lays 1-2 years. When it comes to poultry they only worry about the commercial industry and not use backyard folks who keep birds around 5-10 years.

i also use the adam's spray...and then i use sevin dust. if you the adam's too much thier butts get dry. vetrx is good for that and more. cornishman.

I have only dusted my chickens with de food grade I covered their beaks and their eyes and I dusted their whole bodies then I went in The Henhouse I took all the hay out I put wood chips in they're nests and I disinfected everything and I dusted all the dirt on the ground with DE I disinfected everything I cleaned it up. those lice can not live through DE and it won't hurt the chickens when they pick it off the ground with their food they get it in their system and it kills parasites that is internal parasites. I bought some chicken protector which is been known to be very good for mites and lice on chickens and it's all natural lice don't like it either but the DE actually slices them up so they can't live through it and I haven't seen any sense but if I do see them I'm going to just spray everything LOL
