Getting seven speckled sussex chicks soon :-D

Wow. Ok, so would you want to tell people that you are a 'chicken sexer', or that you sex chickens for a living???

That is nice to know, I was wondering how they were able to do that. Didn't know they had experts!
I wonder what kinda schooling one needs to take in order to be a sexpert LOL

The video I seen on youtube was a woman doing it with the wing feathers, and that's the same way I've seen it done at hatcheries with chicks.  They do hundreds an hr at the big hatcheries (which will sell sexed chicks in minimum orders of 20 and not in the breeds I'm interested in).  I don't want anywhere near that many chickens and am pretty set on the breeds I'm interested in.  I did order more than I want even for chance there's a few males in there.  Guess I'll just give them away on kijiji or something.  I can't eat birds I raise lol.

Wing sexing is done on commercial layers. I suspect that the attention to breeding required to make them sexable by wing only pays off over vent sexing in large quantities. Most breed type pullets bought by backyard keepers are vent sexed. Obviously, sex links are sorted by color. You can search for a Dirty Jobs episode about vent sexing and see the technique.

I ordered two orders from My Pet Chicken. I got five pullets each time and was happy with the condition of the chicks on arrival and their quality when they were older. My Pet Chicken will ship as few as 3 chicks depending on your zip code. I live quite far from them and had to get five as my minimum. I ordered only pullets, which they vent check, and I got only pullets. No surprises. My Speckled Sussex from them is beautiful and lay very large eggs.

I don't have a zip code, have a postal code. I'm assuming My Pet Chicken doesn't deliver up here lol.

SO my order fell through for the Speckled Sussex :-( After no call from her I emailed and she told me she hasn't had much success with breeding this season and to check in with her in another 6 weeks. At this rate I'll never get chickens for crying out loud.

I did poking around on kijiji some more and found someone breeding Columbian Wydonettes (sp?)... After some research and google images I think I'll be quite happy to get some of these beauties. I still want some Speckles Sussex later on but wonder if they'd get picked on if introduced into an already established group (I read they are huge wussies with other birds)

I think I'd like to try my hand at breeding later on. There seems to be a high demand around here for good hardy pet chickens. Only ones that seem to be bred more often are the smaller bantam and ornamental breeds such as silkies.

I have a couple of speckled sussex's and a columbian wyandotte,,my wyandotte is a really sweetie, my sussex's are friendly but they do have big mouths:)) Kind of the little trouble makers of the group.

As well, I have australorps, silver laced wyandottes, buff orps, just got lav orps, lemon cuckoo orp and 2 coronation sussex's..the cornations are very sweet babiess as well

That's quite the colorful flock you got there :-D Chickens are quite addictive aren't they? lol...

I found a lady on facebook selling silver laced wyandottes and ameraucanas. So I picked some up yesterday, she gave me three wyandottes and one free ameraucana in case one of them dies. All were sexed and she showed me how she does it :) Hopefully the guy selling me the Columbians will let me try and sex them myself. I'm still waiting on a call back and if I don't get one soon I'll get more from this lady I visited yesterday, if she has any females left that is.
