Getting some girlfriends for my drake! A few questions.

Aww, your ducks are charming! Sieben is such a beautiful color. Thank you for sharing the pictures -I think I'm going to like it here.

Fiddlesticks! I was hoping that nobody would say that.

Your comment prompted me to contact the hatchery for more information. I'll be ordering from Metzer farms because of their low minimum order requirement and good reviews. Here's what they told me:

"The chart on our website is pretty accurate. The Blue, Black Swedish and Buff are about the same size. "

This is the chart that they're referring to: http://www.metzerfarms.com/DuckBreedComparison.cfm?CustID=1289063
It lists both Buff and Swedes as ranging between 5-6.25 pounds but they did tell me that the females are usually on the low end of that spectrum.

Perhaps they have large stock for that breed. When I was looking into Anconas I noticed that some places said their ducks matured to 4 pounds while others said they were 6-7 pounds. I wonder if with the less-common breeds there is more variation between nursery flocks.

Alternatively, maybe I'm tying too hard to make Buffs work! I just love the way they look so much, and a flock of a Pekin, Blue Swede, and Buff ducks together would be so colorful. I hadn't even thought about Ruens, though. Metzer Farms does sell them but I guess I had crossed them off my list because I thought they'd be the deep-keeled English show type. However, it seems that this hatchery breeds the 'non-show' type, which looks like a more agile, normal duck. I hadn't even realized! They're listed at 5-7.25 pounds on the chart. I'll have to look into them. The only problem is that they seem to be good mothers, and for flock control I might not want somebody who would be trying on a regular basis to hatch more ducks (personal experience has taught me that all accidental babies will be male. Haha). Thank you very much for the suggestion. It does open up my options a bit.

I guess I've really got to think about the Runner idea. I want one more than I want one of those pretty buffs, but I wouldn't want to be raising a runner into a less-than-ideal situation situation for her.

Can somebody tell me; if I ordered ducks that ranged from 5-7 pounds and they all grew up to be just five pounds (technically possible), would they be truly too small for my seven pound drake? Especially because there would only be two of them.

Boy, there's so much planning involved with this! With chickens it's so easy, 'I'll take two of those, and four of these, and a half dozen of those fluffy ones over there,' Hah! and everything always turns out fine. Not so with ducks, I guess.

I am proud of you for planning ahead! Rather than coping with an out-of-control situation in four months, you are aiming to have a happy flock. Bravo!

Since you contacted the hatchery and they have what sounds like larger ducks, then it may well be a go for runners and buffs. Might not hurt, either, to have Plans B and C. Ducks just soak into so many human hearts, it is quite painful to have to let them go. At the same time, aside from being aware that you need to make sure all goes well, there comes a point when being conservative becomes being pessimistic, and that doesn't make sense, either.

Buffs are supposed to be larger than the ones I have. I guess I just ended up with some runt runners and buffs. As I wrote earlier, Einzie is a good five pounds. Michele may have been a solid five, also, but she has passed on (egg yolk peritonitis). I think Elfie is between 3.5 and 4.

I don't weigh them often, by the way.

Even when weights are evenly matched, there can be personality clashes. We just don't know till we dive in. The Duck Forum members are a very helpful and knowledgeable group, I have found, so as you make your decisions and move ahead, please keep us up to date. And we - at least this part of we - love photo's when and as you are able to upload them.

I totally trust Metzer Farms. They've done me quite well with Cayugas. Those gals might do, if you like their looks. As they age, Cayuga ducks start getting white feathers amongst the black, so they don't stay all black.

I know, you didn't want Cayugas, but I love recommending this breed. :)

I love my Cayuga and I am getting more :D They are about the size of a swedish I would say.

Warning: flight of fancy alert!

Okay, so the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy writes (about Buffs)

William Cook, the famous poultry breeder from Orpington, Kent, blended Cayuga, Runner, Aylesbury, and Rouen ducks to create a buff colored duck

Now. You have a lovely white drake. What if you got Cayuga, Runner and Rouen females? After a few generations, who knows? Add in some Buffs, too?

I realize you are not necessarily wanting to start a breeding program. I just wanted to put the idea out there.

And I often suggest people look for rescued ducks, as you know how big they are and whether they are male or female from the gitgo. Friendliness is a concern, though. But you would also know if the ducks were friendly. My buffs are more shy than my runners, but they let me get within a few feet of them, sometimes closer, and I have had three of them for less than four months. Though three or four of my runners are huggy-bears, the rest are about as friendly as the buffs. So I did pretty well with adopting these rescues.

I think it may be my state but there are not rescued chickens anywhere that I can find. I think if they get found they get killed off since they are considered livestock. I have never found a rescued cow either as i looked around I think they just go to slaughter.

But on a sunnier note....gryeyes do your Cauyga lay the black/gray eggs? I have only had drakes thus far. I am hoping for a colorful egg basket as I have EE's and Female cauyga's coming this year and already have brown egg layers one that has brown speckles and another with lavendar/blueish specks.....i think they are pretty.

Thank you so much for all of your nice comments everybody!

I've been away looking into adopting ducks. I was actually able to find several farm-animal rescues that rescue ducks and are within driving distance. Both said on their websites that they always have ducks available and to contact for more information but it's been a week and neither has gotten back to me. So because of time constraint I guess I'm not going to be adopting a duck, but I feel better for trying. Thanks for the suggestion.

Still, I have good news! I ordered the ducklings. The whole family is just ecstatic. I did end up getting a Buff girl and a Blue Swede girl, just like I had been planning before, but I feel so much better knowing that I made an informed decision. I'm kind of worried about just two ducklings undertaking such a perilous journey across the country in the cold. I payed some hefty charges for special packaging and heating pads and the like, though, so hopefully they'll do well. I can't wait! They're shipping on Feb. 11.

I'll share pictures later. We like pictures on this forum, right?

And yes, I would absolutely love to get Cayugas and Runners and Rouens and start breeding ducks. I have plans to have and breed large quantities of ducks (and OEG bantam chickens!) some day but, alas, today is not that day. Right now I have to keep my animals very manageable. I'll get there eventually. ;)

BTW, that really made me laugh! I really appreciate all of your help and suggestions Amiga. I cannot thank you enough. :)

Absolutely. I am excessively, perhaps obsessively, protective of my birds. ;) They've got a super safe coop and a large attached run that is also quite safe. The wire is buried, the windows are grated, etc. Better safe than sorry!
