Getting some spring chickens

Silly question, but what color eggs do brown leghorns lay? I got a couple from a friend of mine last fall, they were molting and I haven't gotten any eggs out of them yet. Not that it matters, I was just wondering.

They lay a white egg. Generally earlobe color determines egg color. There a few exceptions to this rule. If you look in my avatar you can see her bright white earlobes.

Thank you! Mine have white earlobes, too. Mine are the same color as yours, but have the floppy combs. I have no idea how old these chickens are so I don't know if they'll ever start laying, or end up on "the list" this spring.

I would LOVE some floppy combed leghorns, but I'm nervous about their combs in the cold winters here. Good luck!

my favorite white egg layer is my Barred Holand...

they are barred and some confuse them with barred rocks till they start laying white eggs.. mine lay everyday

she and my white leghorn do too.. but the barred hollands are much more personable.

. they love people and hanging out with you... where the leghorns to me are flighty.. I like the barred hollands so much that I am ordering 20 more this spring. and plan on getting a breeding program for them set up.. I like them so much.. body is very much like the leghorns..

you can see the barred hollands body style and tail set here

ps as for eggs that you hardboil and the shell comes off easy... the Blue... easter eggers or Blue Ameracauna's.. even more so than the olive or green eggs but much easier than white or brow.. at least thats what ive found..

I love my Spitzenhauben's I got from Meyer nearly 3 years ago. They lay the most perfect egg shaped white egg. They lay 3 to 5 eggs a week, my girl was the most perfect mother also. I have 2 they are the only 2 I have left from my original flock. They got to stay because they never have failed my with the egg laying and are good mothers. Plus they have character.

I have a Blue Andulusian (white eggs) that I love. She is friendly (maybe that's just her), still jumps on me like she's a chick. I've heard Andulusians are good foragers and I can see it in the color of her eggs. All of my girls get outside for about 2 hours a day, but her eggs have darker orange yolks compared to the rest. She hasn't been laying for long, but I am looking forward to seeing what her laying pattern is when the days start getting longer.

Good luck with your growing flock!

I'm in MN. This is my first winter with these particular chickens, but they're over a year old. They came out of South Dakota (I'm on the border so our weather was the same) and their combs look just fine. We had some extremely cold temps last year. I think you should go for it!

I would, but I have maxed out my chick order already. These Hollands also look nice... So many chickens, so little time!

I guess I jumped the gun in asking. I found a white egg today! After 2 or 3 months of no eggs, I got 4 yesterday, 4 more today, and two a day earlier this week. Hooray!
