Hello! I recently moved out to the redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains (CA Bay Area) and I'm in the process of getting ready to build a coop and take some chicks home. I've had chickens before - 3 hens in a suburban backyard coop. My biggest concern is predator-proofing the coop, and dealing with building on ground that is pretty consistently moist this time of year. Excited to get started!

I'd suggest getting your coop finished before getting chicks... they grow really fast... like ready to go out to the coop in 4 to 5 weeks! I also have an area that used to have a mud problem but I solved it. I shared my process in this thread, which may have other helpful tips as well:

Using 1/2" hardware cloth over all openings in the coop offers the best predator protection. More details here: Predator Proofing

Best wishes starting your new chicken adventure!
