Getting started w quail

I’m also new to quail and was wondering if anyone offers extra protection during times of heavy rain and storms? I live by the shore so it can be high winds occasionally. I have some old windows and was thinking of attaching them to the hutch and only closing them when we have a storm or heavy rain expected to better protect them. Thoughts?

That wounds like a good idea to me. They do need shelter from wind. As long as they are dry and out of the wind they can handle below freezing temperatures quite well.

Which site was rude?
I use 1x6" treated boards for the baseboards on the pens I build. And I run a 2 ft. wire apron all around the enclosure. It's stapled to the inside of the baseboard. I then use concrete to cover over the wire but you can use dirt or gravel but it needs to be buried deeper than if you cover it with concrete. Dirt and gravel is cheaper but I haven't had any predators dig into a pen.
I had written a lengthy ramble and the byc site crashed and deleted it. How deep does the skirt need to be buried w dirt?

Hmm yeah I’ll have to figure out how to keep them dry, we get sideways rain and high winds and stuff sometimes.

It’s officially settled - I’m getting quail! What’s a good starter number? They’re gonna be in a 8x8 or 10x10 ft outdoor aviary

I would suggest 1 male and 5 females to start if you are raising courtnix. Its different for other breeds. I haven't read other parts of this thread so sorry if u already answered this question but what breed are u getting?

You can have a lot of quail in there, but I would start with a small number, maybe five or so to see how you get along with them. You can always add more later.
