Greetings!

My husband is retiring military soon and next week we are buying the family farm in FL and moving in! So excited. Partially because we can finally have chickens (and goats, and horses, and who knows what else I will sneak in!). My 8 year old son is obsessed with getting his own chickens (no joke, he asked Santa for chickens and wouldn't even ask for anything else!!) That said... I haven't had chickens since I was young girl and I remember next to nothing about how we kept them! Found this forum tonight and I am sure I will be asking a LOT of questions! Off to go start reading and hope to not get overwhelmed too fast. Thanks for having me!

Cheryl

Checker corgi I am so happy your family is so into chickens! Ah the old ask Santa trick that 1 has been used in my family a couple times. I would love to welcome you to our roost! I am happy to see that you are already reading into topics! I would also love to thank your husband for his service to our country. If you want the best place on here for learning check out our learning center where there are topics all about raising chickens and your flock. When you get chickens make sure to post pics, ask as many questions as you wish, and good luck with the move!
Justin :)

Nice to meet you Cheryl, welcome to Backyard chickens. Is the corgi yours? We have many red & white Pembrokes in the area but, haven't seem any Cardigans away from dog shows.

Yes, the one in my profile is Jett. He is a total Momma's boy. Sleeping on my foot as I type. I also have a red brindle boy, Merlin. Merlin is a lover and I don't worry about him at all with the chickens. Unfortunately, I think I will have to be diligent with Jett.

He has strong hunting instincts and a bad habit of chasing birds already.....

Hi Cheryl and welcome to BYC and congrats on your new home - that must be very exciting. I think i'd have a meltdown if i had some real space with planning a chicken empire

. I'm sure that you will be asking Santa for chickens, along with your son in a few months time!

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre
https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center, and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you

All the best
