Getting started

I have not started my chicken family yet but I have been doing a lot of reading. I was thinking of building a permanent coop for the main living house for my chickens and also using a tractor for the times when I want them to have some new scenery during the day as we have a lot of hawks in my area. Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed. Thanks.

I am living in Kentucky around the Lexington area right in the middle of the state.

In that area, I would personally go with an open air design, shade, and lots of air flow. They will need it in summer and won't mind it in winter. Usually you face the open side to the east in this type structure, of course. Here are some examples:
