Getting the breed I want

Do I need a rooster and hen of the same breed to get the breed of chicks I want? If I have Wyandotte hens and a leghorn rooster, what kin of chicks will I wind up with?

You will have to have a Roo of the same breed as your Hens in order to get 'true' breed in their
offspring.

That said, I do a lot of breeding on my homestead and some of my most interesting looking and
great colored egg laying pullets and handsomest and best tempered cockerels have been the
offspring of my 'selected breeding' of crossing specific breeds to enhance the characteristics,
colors, body conformation, egg color, temperament, etc. that I like.

A wyandotte/leghorn cross will give you mixed breed chicks. So will crossing any two breeds. A pure bred animal, by defination, has to have parents of the same breed.
