Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

So I am all set for a trip back to the farm.

School is fully loaded but most of my units are on line so I can do them anywhere.

I just posted my 4 original goats on facebook. I sold them in a heartbeat fr double what Bernie negotiated them for so I am happy. I will have to deliver them (for a fee) next week

Glad you noobs are enjoying the thread. Its growing and growing

Did you ask a fair price? That seems like a fast sale at cheap prices to me.
But, what do I know.

i have my eye on a 1/2 hector or so out behind my inlaws

not sure how much i can do if i'm only there max. 1 month per year

in the states i always say "buy fence not feed"

good quality fence only needs to be purchased once

in the Philippines i'm guessing good quality would mean cement (6' high or better)

no other kind of fence will keep both the things with 4 feet & the things with 2 feet out of your poultry.

Best fence and or cheapest lol
We have 4.4 acres 1hr from Cagayan de oro and 1hr from iligan city in mindanao.
We spent 6 miserable months there (father in law issue)
And of course English issue lol.

Bamboo is cheapest then add wire. Cement is best off if you do it yourself they add too much water and sand and don't use enough rebar.

Family was shocked my wife there daughter knew how to do stuff better then them and didn't believe she could operate a saw etc. She cut better then the men could lol and uses a hammer and knife better then some of them.

If married you need you and wife then marriage certificate to be able to stay upto 1 yr.

12 days and counting we will have our first baby (girl) and start working on naturalization for her to be a citizen so we could stay longer and come back freely. 1yr is limit after that you are usually screwed.

But we want to get some pens for pigs and area for chicks. Also think about meat rabbits and have a rabbit feast. And turkeys of course.

Also remember spouse name or family name for land to stay safe.

my farther inlaw found out 1st hand

his broody hen was leaving the property & she was getting help

so nice of his uncle to put her up under his arm & take her to the other side of the street

long story short he got the hen back

5 min. later it would have been another story (adobo)

i'm wondering how much land would be needed to raise a flock of DP birds over there

something like a buff Orpington or even a Bresse might do well if rotated on pasture.
half a hetare is decent. our farm portion is 0,6 ha. or so. plant lots of mulberry and you could run 4 goats too.

the trick is to buy good hollow blocks - you can use the rebar you want - we used 10mm bar, you need to stucco the fence when complete - it will then last 30 years,

hollow blocks are 10p each
cement 240/40kg
10mm rebar is 80p /6m
a 10x10 pillar every 10 feet

As far as visa goes - if you arrive with your spouse you get a 12 month "balikbayan" visa at no cost. Otherwise its 30 days - used to be 21. you can spend a whole day renewing it or just pay the extra fee on the way out. to renew you are better off taking a trip with your spose to kota kinabolo in Borneo. its about 100 bucks return and you get another year

price was cheap but I knew that going in.

The native goat gave me three doeling offspring and I bought her for 500p sold 1500
the others i also doubled my money and have doelings so I am ok.

The guy added an order for chickens so i ended up with $300 from the sale,

Not bad. Its the year of the goat btw

Thanks for that tip about borneo. Gives me other ideas also.
Hollow block is fine but better to watch how they do it as many add too much sand or beach sand and they are brittle. At least where we are located in ph.

Got me thinking of the pillar and a good way to link them.

Depending on area broken bottles pointed up is common along with nails etc. Especially if it's a climb able wall.

I want a sliding gate like we do here in states.

Oz was that .6 or 6 hectare? If .6 it must be tight.

we live on the beach but buy river sand. Its about 50 bucks for 5 cubic yards.

our construction guys would never use beach sand - they have brains - but we also make sure we hire a lead guy who has experience and then watch them.

Ouur total lot is 2.5 acres - 1 ha.

On 0.6 ha we have 21 chicken coops, a 750 sq ft piggery, a goat yard, 35 fruit trees, 600 sq feet of garden. We still have a little space.

Wish we had beach front. Maybe after we get it all started we could sell it and get beach front lol.
I would get a decent boat and build a dock along with going fishing alot.

Our lot is basically rectangle. Shack is in the shade near star apples.
