Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I am fairly positive that we will NEVER EVER EVER process birds on my property. Ever. It's not the bleeding that bothers me. It's the killing...lol. I'm pretty sure I would be a sobbing mess. Especially with the death flap thing.

*shudder*

Now my husband has no problem with it...and I'm pretty sure he could do it just fine. But I don't even want to risk having to see them flap. I just can't.

So we sent our last batch of boys over to the Mennonite neighbor. He was processing a bunch of his own birds and just added in our three. He has a handy chicken de-featherer thing, too. It did leave a few stubs on there though.

Which leads me to a question...

Hubby and I have long disputed the merits of eating chicken skin. I love me a nice piece of crispy skin. Hubby thinks it's entirely gross to eat the skin. Unsanitary. After getting back my home grown boys...and seeing the stubble...I'm kind of leaning that way right now, lol.

Eating the skin...yay or nay???
Use a cone it restrains them in the position that keeps them pretty much hypnotized. If you hold a chicken upside down by its feet it will petty much relax or go to a sort of hypnotized state.

Most definately Yay. You can also just skin the bird and render out the fat along with the rest of the fat you want to remove from the carcass. Then take the skin and cut it up into strips and toss it all in a frying pan on low heat. The fat will render out and the skin will crisp up..... You can use it like bacon crumbles on salads.... But the fat .... Oh My GAWD..... once rendered it pretty much keeps forever.... use it for stir fry or any where you might use butter.

Look up recipes for Schmaltz..... Oh here is a good one I wanna try this one one day.... I may anyway just with a store bought bird.

The pin feathers I hear can be more predominant at certain times.... I forget which. You can pluck em out with tweasers. But they are sanitary.....

I've been a vegetarian since I was 5 years old so i don't think I would be able to disbatch anything unless it was in pain. That being said I applaud you guys for having the strength to eat your own birds. It is very inspiring.

LOL, hubby says we are all disgusting, vile people. He says, "Do you know what those birds were rolling in????"

I guess I shouldn't tell him that I sometimes use chicken feet when I'm making a broth...
