Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I grew up on the metric system... I'm getting the hang of American measurements.. somewhat. It's just so incredibly confusing to me.

Metric makes SO much sense. 1 square decimeter is 1 liter is 1 kilo of water. It makes math a million times easier.

Quote: I was in Highschool when they made that announcement. 40 years ago for me.... I think part of the whole issue tha caused us not to convert is we were still heavy into manufacturing. Most of the tools and existing machinery are made in Imperial Units.... Or feet and inches. Brought to us by the English.... LOL. When I worked in the machine shop some of the equipment dated back to World War II.

Having had to work in both English and Metric in the manufacturing industry was a non issue because of computers. Try building things where half the components are in Metric and half are in English. I dont try to convert I just use the measuring convention needed to accomplish the job. I do use approximates for estimation between the two.... Starting with a meter being close to three feet. and visa versa.

I draw the line on nuts and bolts though.... Its easier for me to figure out the thread pitch by dividing up an inch. I still scratch my head on Metric and have to bring out the calculator to find out which size to use.

The only area of the world that uses 2x 110v is the Americas. To get sufficient watts down a wire you need two of them. US has two hot wires and the return is through the ground.

The rest of the world uses 220-240v. Two wires come in but one is the return. IE a pos and a neg. A 1000w only draws 4.5 amps instead of 9 amps.

I have a 5000w converter (which I blew the fuse on yesterday) that will run anything I have from the USA.
so the only way to step it down is a converter....... got ya thanks

I hope my answer did not sound condescending. I was trying to give background for the non Merkans.
I have not yet, to this day found out just why we went for that 2 wire and ground system.

It makes NO rime nor reason to me, and I have worked as an Aircraft Electrician / Avionics Tech. for over 40 years.
