Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Thats a good question.

Dealing with pharmacueticals that look or sound the same is an occupational hazard for me.

I tried several variants of the spelling. I am dealing with a guy (Bernie) that speaks one language talking to a guy that speaks a similar but different language (the agrivet store) then him texting the name of the medication to Mrs Oz and her transferring the info to me.

So for now - its snake oil lol. It looks like it worked. When I get there in March, I will go and look at the label. I have ordered the antibiotics I mentioned above from Jeffers Vet on line here and will throw them in the golf bag.

When I bought drugs to give our pigs, they dispense them in a drinking straw with a knot tied at each end. You put the needle through the plastic and draw it up. No labels, no written instructions but very economical - you dont have to pay for 100 doses to inject 4 pigs.
So they're getting better?

I dont want to be overly optimistic but as only one chick showed symptoms and we acted quickly - I am hopeful that we caught it in time.

Bernie is proving to be a great partner in this.

He better be - he is going to have a pile of eggs to hatch come mid April.

.

The current coop is a duplex but needs the center divide in the outside area. Each side will hold about 30 adults. I have 38 chicks - probably 18-20 pullets. I will cull all but 3 roos. I am hoping that the BCM, BA or one of the pure RIRs I have is a boy. The other side will house the hatchees from the next round - well some of them - all these will be the egg producers.

My current plan is to build a row house coop - 6 coops side by side with a roo and 5 - 7 purebred hens in each. The coops will be 6x4 inside, an under-coop area sheltered and then a 12 x 4 run. These will be the girls and boys that will help develop the breeds in the Philippines - the trios and quads I hope to sell as well as hatching eggs and oz-bators in the future. The roof will be thatch, the floors will be bamboo but I am unsure of the materials I will use for the cladding.I have enough of the scrap wood to use again but perhaps I will try and get the 1 inch round bamboo, then varnish it - I love that look. The other option is 1/2 inch plywood with a woven bamboo matting on the outside - then varnished. Its spectacular. The wood I used on the last coop is free - but I am thinking of incorporating that into a fence for the yard - it will get utilized regardless. We re-purpose everything. Nails get saved as well as wood.

The only thing we don't reuse is the dried paint and the only part of the animal we don't eat is its squeal.
OZ don't process too many of those roos
i have found out the hard way more than once that you always want to have a back up roo!
chickens fall over dead
1 day a member of your flock will not leave the coop
the next day she is stone cold dead
just lost 1 of my 4 black english orp hens
i guess i need to get over to Renie's for some hatching eggs
i want some blue/black britts & also some of her english buff britts
i want about 8/10 laying hens for each of my breeds

I have silkies on my list Having a brigade of broodies will definitely be beneficial in the master plan.

24 of your orps is perfect. I play with my spreadsheet every day. Trying to match needs with breeds with the ability to get them there.

Wow - so you have 17 more chicks. Congrats

Dont worry about the fish. There is no rush on my end. The fishing is always hit and miss during monsoon seasons. Next month it will be calm seas and hotter than hell.
