Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Mosquitoes just LOVE certain people. I'm one of them. I swear once one finds me, they call the family over for a reunion. My poor son is the same... that boy cannot set foot outside. And his swell up bad too. My step-son will have no bites whatsoever, my baby boy is covered in red welts.

The other day I even had a honey bee trying to land on me over and over again.. I think he was thirsty and I was damp from working outside.
I used to be one of those people, but for years they've let me be. This summer they've taken a liking to me again though

On a more positive note, we now have three laying chickens. The last of the Alho's finally decided to start egg production.

We do have some nasty spots too though, we went to train the dogs a couple of days ago, and I was in charge of throwing dead seagulls into a lake for them to then fetch. The best spot to do this from for the kind of training we were working on, was from the reeds. On each leaf in the reeds, I saw about 100-200 of these miniature mosquitos we've got here (Ceratopogonidae), and of course they all decided that I was a delicious meal. I've been scratching my legs like crazy since then.

My great grandmother was from Sweden and I got her light skin. Nobody has as many bites as me. My kids were darker because of their daddy. Irish/Am Indian. I always have to spray down and they still bite me.

I have had some success with taking high doses of Vitamin B complex. Reduced it by 80 to 90%.

By high doses I mean about 3x the recommended daily dose

If you have grazing animals getting eaten by them then put out a sulfur salt block. It changes the smell of their blood and the mosquitoes don't like it.

I am a magnet for fleas and mosquitoes while DH collects
the ticks. The bites are extremely itchy for me, to the point
I will scratch myself to nearly raw meat. I had read about
some supplements and gave them a try and while it doesn't
stop all the bites I definitely get less of them. The supplements
I take are a B complex vitamin and a garlic gel cap once daily.
I don't know if it would work for you but it does for me.

One thing I've found works for the bites, among many other things, is hemorrhoid cream. Really helps diminish the itching.

Mosquitos are attracted to carbon dioxide.. I am certain composters outgas co2.

Keeping your area clear of breeding grounds is essential.... here we do have them but only where you have stagnant water.... Yep I realize this is impossible for certain areas...

Vitimine B and Garlic in the diet are good for fleas.

Here the ticks can live up to two years without a water source other than dew... they hibernate under the leaves of bushes waiting for dinner to brush them off. It used to be every time we went for a trail ride wed untack the horses and go to work picking ticks off. I got 22 one day... The next day I found the rest just latched on for a meal for a grand total of 34... counting the ones I found on me.

How would Bayvantic work on horses?

You're Northern European, what do you expect?

It's camouflage against the snow.

I'm pasty as heck too.. as a kid my hair would turn practically white in the sun and I did get a decent tan from playing outside. These days I don't get outside as much. My son is white. Literally white. Not pink. White. He glows in pictures

I'm 100% Dutch, Daddy is American with strong German roots among other things.

My son does that, he claws himself open. I used to as a kid. Scratch 'em open, let them heal, pick the scabs.. I got a lot of little scars left from that.

Nothing helped keep them away. I eat a ton of garlic too.

Interesting... Worth a shot. Thanks! I feel bad keeping the boy indoors. He loves being outside, but he just claws himself open when he's itchy.
