Just came across this thread and it was so gripping I had to read all the way through, even though I should be doing chores in the garden. Great story, excellent coop - and photos of chickens too, couldn't ask for more. I'm hooked!

Even if there is no movement on candling I would not toss them without pipping the aircell to check the membrane. Sometimes you will just have a late baby that needs more time. If you touch the membrane, a live chick will wiggle. Put any wigglers back & give them more time. Just make sure the membranes stay moist so they don't shrinkwrap after the shell is opened. The power came on after a hour so all is good. Its to the brooder for all chicks in the morning. I will candle the eggs left and toss them tonight if there are no signs of movement.

As yesterday was picture perfect, today is not so. Twenty mile an hour winds are battering us directly from the gulf. We are working in the garage making the laying boxes. I will put a double roe of sic on each side of the duplex chicken coop. 12 boxes in an 8 x 8 coop should be sufficient for up to thirty hens going forward.
As I am faced with the possibility of only one breeding batch of purebreds I will just put rings on the maran and Australorp and put them with the mutts till I can bring overall new batch of eggs to make them partners to breed.
There are lots of lessons learned in this experiment. I am learning every day. Once back in los angeles I will develop long long lists.
In the mean time ....
The adventure continues!
