Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Wow - I sure wish I lived near you - I'd take them in a heartbeat!

I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding them a new home!

I'm also very happy to hear the seller was so courteous about resending the eggs on the proper date. Those are great breeds!!

And on the subject of recycling and coop builds, I have just finished a major "up-cycling" project, turning a 1970's horse trailer into my new multi-function chicken coop. If you're interested, you can see proof of my insanity Here.

And Oz - your chicks are looking fantastic! So wonderful to have a great guy like Bernie to take such good care of them when you can't be there!
Thanks

What a great coop.

The chicks are doing very well. Bernie is a champion

Listening to this adventure has me thinking I should search out some eggs to send to the preschool hatch. I recieved a phone call yesterday that a second teacher is looking to hatch eggs. I would love try out a few new breeds and they would be willing to hatch 18 each! It is going to be exciting to have baby chicks again.

Yeah I thought I had the right plan to begin with but I am told we need other arrangements if I am going to have breeding pens.... 4x4 pens are not big enough for 2 chickens....

OH and they gotta be able to free range....

So the coop we built in October 2012 will have to be modified... A Bunch. The original is 8'x16' divided in half. The front was to be for roosting at night and laying boxes. The back pen I had planned on dividing it up into 9 stacked 4'x4' breeding pens. Now with all these dang roosters/pairs I got, and new requirements. I am thinking Tractors may be the way to go and maybe some chicken and dumplings...

Plus trying to find ways of cutting the feed bill for 42, 38 after freezer camp reservations are filled. And I'm not allowed to practice my chicken math Till they can pay there own way

. We need a smiley with a adding machine to symbolize chicken math.

I"m building a 12x24' coop, divided into 3 sections; 8x12 each. One section will be for the layer flock.
The other two sections will each be divided into three 4x8 sections for breeding, which gives me room for 7 breeding roosters. Each section will have an outdoor run, sized according to how many birds are in that section (breeding pen vs layer flock). Now I just have to figure out what to do for grow out pens! I have had a bad case of chicken math also; going from 5 birds one year ago to 55 chickens, 5 ducks at the moment, with 26 eggs in the bator and more planned.

yes you should

my 33 month old girl spent 3 hrs on a bus then a jeepney to say hello to the chickens - and did it on the way back too, preschoolers love chickens
