Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Oz, I have both sizes of EcoGlow brooders and I love 'em. The 50 is easier to adjust the height for growing chicks, but the 20s fit better into my Rubbermaid brooder bins. I have two 20s and one 50.

The big issue with 'em is the need to have an ambient temp of around 50 degrees, so they're not so great for cold locations like a coop in the winter

Knowing limitations of the product is important. Some people expect miracles. Thanks for the input

Just had an idea!! We could all apply for "religious status" and get tax exempt status for our chicken cult! LMAO ROFL our bylaws would be renamed "the pullet pact". Counsel members could be "shells & yolks". Ok having way too much fun with this!

That's very interesting. It just so happens I am an ordained minister through Universal Life Church, (anybody can be one) http://www.themonastery.org/ordination?gclid=CJ706qaMgLcCFYNx4AodL20ALg. I married a very old friend of mine when his church refused to perform the ceremony because he is Purto Rican and she was white, (and this was in like 2003). They have since have decided to accept them back into their parish, Better to have em and there $$ then send them else where. I am also an Honorary Beer Church Minister, http://www.beerchurch.com/, I guess everybody needs something to belive in.. I belive I need another beer.

same here or i go up to the dump to "forage"
rite now i am taking my old movable meat pen (it has wheels under it)
& turning it into a 4 level brooder
each level will hold up to 50 babies
each week i'll move them down to the next level till
they are ready to sexed
the pullets will be sold off
the cockerels will go to the chicken tractor unless they are really good lookers
in which case i'll set them up with a couple pullets & sell em as a trio.
now i need to start getting 4 of thesehttp://www.brinsea.com/prod-EcoGlow_50_Chick_Brooder-256.aspx
1 for each level

piglett
the brinseas are nice pig but why not just make a small Ohio brooder ? 20 bucks to build and the principle is the same but the Ohio or aka hover is cheap ,easy and effective as the chicks self regulate

i will get 1 & if i like it i'll get more
the thing i like is they only use 60 watts not 250
my 2x2 Ohio brooder only uses two 15 watt incandescents that's 30 watts temps steady 95* inside no adjustment in height no nada i use the pine bedding on top for insulation but if you are in a cold area you might need bigger bulbs
