Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

we have been going through 50lbs of layer & another 50lbs of finish pellets each week
my wife has started to process our meat birds so soon there will be no need to purchase finish feed at all
however we did find a few pullets who managed to pose as cockerels in with them
i sold off 6 of them to a friend yesterday for $30 & i put a large black english orpington cockerel in with then for free
i figured they needed a fella to watch over them
not sure how pullets eating finishing feed will be affected so i kicked them out the door cheep
i think they will come around once they get used to their new diet.

i still have a few more if anyone is in new hampshire & needs cheep soon to be layers

I'm in Vermont. If only I weren't allergic to chicken eggs! LOL Know anyone getting rid of quail hens?

how about chicken meat?
these girls would love to start laying for you this winter
you could incubate the eggs & have baby chicks running all over the place
they are DP so they have a bunch of meat on them @ about 20 weeks
good for filling the freezer :)

Very tempting, piglett. My husband and I have actually been talking about meat chickens. I think I'd need your wife to teach me how to process them too though!

we gave some hatching eggs to one of my co-workers
out of 14 eggs he ended up with 11 buff orpington chicks
he used a cheep (50 bucks) still air foam incubator & turned the eggs by hand 3 times a day
still he ended up with a good hatch so it's not all that tough
anyhow 5 turned out to be boys
my wife & i came down to his place so we could teach him how to process them
an hour later the job was all done
he gave us 2 for the freezer & he kept 3 which was fine with us

now how far away are you from Orford nh?
a forum member that i know lives there, her name is Renie
if your near you can probably get some great quality birds to start off with
some of her imported english orpingtons are almost the size of a turkey
no kidding, roosters up to 15lbs
i have some from her & they are great eating
we had one for Christmas dinner last year :)
i learned how to process chickens from watching youtube
lots of good info on there
the more you do it the better you get at it
the 1st one i did took 45 min.
now i can do one in 15 min. & my wife is even faster
so i let her do the processing for the most part

I've got three guineas in my coop that I need to process so YouTube will be my best friend that day! Scrub out the coop and I'll be ready for a trip to Orford. I'm up near Burlington but I've traveled that far for birds before. It'll probably be spring by then as there's a six month old baby, a four year old, and a workaholic husband in the mix. LOL Nothing happens fast around here!

I need some personal lessons on dispatching

Our first and last one was a disaster.
