Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I could not buy bird net for that price let alone something as durable as the fish net you have!
its a great example of how commerce will set a price based on what the buyer perceives as a good price.

i bought a hundred of those plastic egg flats that hold 30 chook eggs for 27 cents each. they sell on ebay for three bucks.

Mrs Oz will often snap a pic and send via WhatsApp as she is in the store to make sure she is getting what i need

200m rope 1980 ($44.70)
1kg 3mm nylon 290 ($6.54)

I looked at importing the clear dozen ones, they advertised 0.0001c US per unit. Formerly inquired and they responded with a min purchase order for 500,000. No probs, about a 20 foot containers worth.

When they sent the final quote the price had jumped from 0.001 cent per unit to 11c. The order was never placed after that little surprise.

while your life may not be glamorus I would still rather be out in the philipeans or some central/south american place with plenty of animals and enough space to live and even if it took work I would be happy.

Oh dont get me wrong, I love it.

Some people get the impression that you can live like a king in a third world country. While that is far fetched, you certainly can be comfortable. Labor is cheap. Some supplies are cheap. Groceries, utilities and fuel are expensive.

If you did not have to have some struggle for it, you can never really appreciate it.

The Android for Analou is now with Mrs Oz. She is charging it up then will text "ON 299" to 2200. That will deduct 300pesos ($6.50) of "load" from the prepaid sim card and give her 250MB of data valid for 30 days - if it was only that simple in the USA for a small data plan. Using the app Whatsapp, Analou should be able to start sending me photos as early as Saturday.

Currently she texts my Filipino sim card for 1p. If I reply using the sim card from here its about 40 cents so I use www.afreesms.com from my pc. The 300p access wil save me a lot of money and get me photos to boot.

I am proud of Bernie today.

He and Aljay did their first unsupervised pig vaccinations. All seven pigs received Myco Shield which helps prevent pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.

On Saturday he will give the second dose of Rhini Shield and Tetanus to the boar and pigs 4-6.

The final farrowing pen will be finished tomorrow along with the six new coops. Then its the goat shed and to start on the 28' x 40' piggery. The fence project is approaching 70% completion. I would love to employ another 4 guys and just get it over with but even though labor is cheap, it adds up.

On the hatching front, the eggs are looking good in the incubator. I am quietly hoping for about 50 chicks. Its day 14 and we have a little more than that developing. We suffer big losses between days 10 and 16 so of course it could go south very fast.

I have a beautiful black Bresse roo I am hoping to get some pullets for. The odds are still in our favor for white rocks, buff orps and black jersey giants to beef up our genetic lines. Dick Horstman's Andalusians and Dorkings are a bust - no Andalusions and just 1 Dorking. - with my luck - it will hatch a roo. lol. 3 of 18 of his SPR are fighting on.

We have a dehumidifier in the much smaller and fairly well closed in incubation room and its doing a good job at keeping humidity at 45%. I am hoping that the dehumidifier will help get them to day 18.

Quail go into lockdown tomorrow and hatch Friday or Saturday.

Nervous times ahead,
