Indonesian food is truly my fave

Yummy. Rijsttafel. Gado gado, babi pangang... nasi.. bami... atjar tjampoer... sate!

Most Chinese restaurants in Holland are Indonesian-Chinese.... imagine my disappointment when I first had 'American' Chinese. I've learned to adjust, there's still some good dishes out there... but it's not like authentic Indonesian-Chinese (don't ask my why those two get lumped together. Even 'Indonesian' cookbooks have chinese recipes in them *laugh*)

I love fu yung hai, which is strangely not the same as the American Egg foo young.. Indonesian fu yung hai has a sweet red sauce, rather than no sauce or a salty broth/gravy. I guess that's really the difference, Chinese as found in the US is often really REALLY salty, while Indonesian Chinese has often a sweet/sour and spicy note.

You're killing me! Eat well when you're there.. and mail me some

My wife used to think I was crazy when I expressed my disappointment in American Chinese food. After we went back home and I took her to my preferred Chinese takeaway place (cooks are all Cantonese), she knew exactly what I meant. She still misses that food.

As for Indonesian food, I haven't had anything close to it since I have been in the states. Now I am hungry......

Indonesia is the spice islands. Most of the aromatic spices come from the islands north of Bali and east of Borneo.

The food of Indonesia is exremely varied but there is something for everyone. It is much more verstile than Thai and more flavorful than Chinese.

I often wonder if we can only blame the Spanish for such boring food in the Philippines. Even the poorest of meals in Indonesia have sensational flavors.

Now there are some dished from the Philippines that are good but..... Their southern neighbors know food

I need a duck coop. We lost a few ducklings to the monsoons and tropical depressions this season.

I also have guineas in a coop designed for chicken breeders and not enough chicken coops.

Then there are the turkeys......

I better start working out how to make three more structures fit in the landscape

Right now we are struggling with enough scrap wood to finish the fence. There are about 20 x 10ft panels to go. We have exhaused both my suppliers of hardwood. The resaw mils in our area dont have scrap - its always used to make charcoal. We may have 3 mahogany panels ans another 5 from the coconut trees we have harvested, The final 12 will just have to be solid cinderblock.

After the side fence, its piggery time. We have ordered 500 bamboo for the beach fence but they might take 2 months to materialize,

The duck villa may end up just being woven coconut branches - the same as the garden wind breaks below - very native indeed.

As I type Mrs Oz is in Bali.

Its a funny place, Its a bit like Mexico in some ways - many people go there but very few get to see under the tourist's manicured surface, There is a whole ecosystem of culture that goes on inspite of tourism

On my first trip I was befriended by a family who treat me as one of their own. They are part of the roal family of a region in Bali. 2 of my 3 brothers as well as my sister have been and all treated to the wonders of the "real" Bali

They are off to a temple - one of the 6 major temples of bali but also one of the least visited by tourists. Mrs Oz was there with me 5 years ago.

I firmly believe coturnix plot suicide. Our first adventure saw them drown so we had to cut plastic mesh and place it in the brooder water bottles.

Today we found 5 dead quail in 3 condos that had jammed themselves around the corner in 2" pipe feeders. Sheesh.

Pipe feeders out, chick feeders in
in my experience, quail are opportunity grabbers, when they see a way out, they fly out very fast!!

the thing though, when they're chicks, they orient their actions with the sun if they're exposed outside.
