Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

one guy can dig a hole that size and six feet deep at our place before lunch. its pure sand. when he hits 7 ft he is level with the ocean and is creating a well. I would love a few semis of that red stuff to add to my soil.

.

Apart from the quail, I will probably not persue the chukar for much longer. Primarily, I really dont like caging birds in small cages and I really dont want to invest more money in these birds at the moment and I need every coop I have. We will see how it plays out for now. It saddens me to see them in cages so the Chukar may go in with the quail in a coop for now.

Chickens, turkeys, guineas and ducks are plenty. Peafowl are still on the cards as decorations. When we started all this, it was like throwing stuff at a wall and seeing what sticks. Small birds arent sticking. I will re-evaluate pheasants next year but no eggs will be in the golf bag this season.
you already have more breeds of birds than 99.9% of the people in the world

if something just isn't a good fit cut it loose

i'm sure with more time and more $$$

you could make them work

but it's looking like your plate is already over flowing

in a couple more years if you feel there is a real market for them

and you you have a bunch of things all "dialed in"

then give them another try

A few months back local BYCers in Souther California got together for a meet-up hosted by @OffGridMAMA and I collected clothing to be sent over under the banner of the "Chicken Mission"

The first boxes of clothes that were given to me at the meet-up arrived in the Philippines last Friday. The remainder will arrive at the end of this month.

Altogether I shipped more than 300lbs of clothing and shoes from generous BYCers.

A huge thank you my friends.

The clothes will be dispersed to The Holy Infant Orphanage in Bacolod and to needy locals.

Clothes you consider worn may still have many many more wears in them. Stains that you thought may be indelable can be removed with persistance by someone who would value the shirt or trousers. Scuffs on a shoe are not a reason to hold back. These people literally have two or three shirts and pairs of shorts to their names.

I ship the clothes at my expense and will not sell nor profit from anything ever donated to the cause. I will continue to ship boxes each month as my budget allows and peoples generousity continues.

Thanks

Oz

Thanks for the input.

Mrs Oz does not want to get rid of them just yet so we shall see how they do in the coop. If they seem to thrive and if budgets allow, I will build them a 30m long 2 m wide "flight pen" later in the year.

The kids do love their quail eggs.

I have heard that sand and clay make bricks, if you get your semis full of clay make chicken coops with brick walls.

you got that right

i saw the one little girl every couple days wearing the same pair of shorts

i'm going to make a guess & say she only had a couple pair of shorts to her name (she was about 8)

she is some how related to me wife

so i'm guessing she now has more clothes than that

because we have sent about 8 large boxes of clothes over there

through a forwarding company in the last couple years

my mother inlaw figures out who gets what

most of the clothes ended up being name brands

which do seem to hold up better than the cheep ones

but Wally World stuff is still much better than nothing at all

Well Hello to the crazy chicken man! I have been reading for the past week trying to catch up on everything you've accomplished, and I'm truly full of respect for you and what you are doing. Sounds incredible and I really enjoy all your postings and the stuff others add.

I've been here for a while and finally chimed in. I started with 5 tiny little balls of fluff and now have 19 adults, 21 teenagers, 9 pan-frys, 7 babies and 75 eggs in 2 bators. Hubby built a Plucker out of spare parts and the coop the same. Hoping to be set come summer with the pan-frys in the freezer and egg sales skyrocketing! People start coming out of the woodwork once they realize how yummy they are.

Please keep posting and I love reading your posts.... not just on this one, but all your other posts on other forums as well!

So I am no longer a "Lurker" ! :)
