Those labor standards sound practically barbaric to folks in the US/Europe, I'm sure. It's hard to believe you had trouble hanging on to employees with what you offer, if that's the standard. Honestly, what you offer sounds great to American standard, considering how many struggle keeping a roof over their head.

the Philippines is very consumer orientated. having the best phone is paramount. most phones are prepaid so an iPhone 6 is about 1000 dollars yet the apple store is sold out.

they are also one the highest ranking users of social media in the world. internet cafes make good money from Facebook and Instagram.


a young Filipina will skimp on food to save to buy a "forever 21" article of clothing, then use the shopping bag as a purse to carry lunch to work until it falls apart so everybody knows she bought something there. A Starbucks coffee will be sipped all day


we supply the farm with a smart phone and a 300mb allowance per month. the package gives 50 all network texts as well. the 300 MB will allow 200 low resolution photos and thousands of what's app or Viber messages with provision to text if the internet connection is down or they need to contact the secretary in kabankalan who distributes salaries when we are not here.

I feel that we pay good salaries. A couple can afford to pay off a motorbike as domestic employees which is unheard of. by having a large benefit package ensures the future for the children. paying for education is better than alcohol or cell phone status. the lump sums from copra sales gives them the opportunity to buy bigger purchases that they could never afford by trying to save. pressure from families to give money from monthly salary is high. those few hundred pesos a month they save end up going to pay for a party or someone's debt at a loan shark. we encourage our workers not to share with their families the profit sharing deal. it should be their choice how they spend the money.

They sound like such well deserving people.
Their hard work could earn a real future for their children as well as nutrition and a roof over their heads for life.
Their kids may have the opportunity to go to college and move out of poverty.

I think I counted 16 extra posts. so we need 10016 to get there.

today is the first day without the salt winds for the past week. the bay is calm so the kids went out at low tide and collected a basket of shells from the little sand bar islands from 6am until 8am. we brought the kids bikes from Bacolod and have as bike for the farm's kids so they are all our screaming around the place. its fun to hear the laughing and playing.

I have 2 full days and 2 part days left on CocoBeach before I leave.

most of the projects planned have been completed. the turner for the bator did not get made so will be added to the list for next trip. we have to replace the electrical wire to the garage with a larger diameter as the load is increase and I want it not to have issues when I am gone - all the outbuildings are fed from a breaker box there.
 
labor laws for domestic workers

minimum salary 1500 php per month (approx USD 35)
bed space (many sleep in the kitchen on a mat)
food (most people get dried fish and low grade rice and leftovers - sometimes left over from the boss' plate)
8 hours off in a day (does not have to be continuous)
24 hrs straight off per week (can be accrued)
1 week vacation
13th month pay at Christmas ( a bonus) after employment for one year
health insurance and social security after 6 months

our gardener and maid work 8.5-9 hours per day not 16
their salary is 3 times minimum
they get food when we are here and rice, vegetables that they are growing as part is their job, eggs, chicken and duck.
they get either Nov 1st or New Year off and all other major holidays are split. all are paid.
social security and health insurance from day one and we pay both employee and employer contributions
school uniforms, supplies for kids. tuition to private school (approx $25 per month at minimum and up to $100)
clothing for workers and family
a weeks pay per part of quarter worked as Christmas bonus
40% off all copra sales (php 30-45k per year)
All money from vegetables and coconut byproducts
yay know Oz if I was 30 years younger, foot loose and fancy free..... I'd come work for you!
