getting to a delaware

Tim i have a question for you. What is the reason your are breeding F1s to each other and not F1roo to NH hens? Thanks cory

The F1s are all black barred you have to breed the F1 back to each other to get the Del(silver male) to use back over the NH dams. If you breed the F1 black barred male to the Red hens you will get Red barred progeny.

if you are going to use a F2 columbian silver male( obscene amount of F2 hatching eggs you would need to get a Silver Wheaten Barred columbian male) just to cross it back to NH hens, you may as well use the F1(saving alot of breeding time) E/eWh Co/co+ S/s+ golden roo back to NH to get about the same results(50 percent silver wheaten columbian hens instead of 100 percent of them)

If you breed the F1 black barred male to the Red hens you will get Red barred progeny.

Incorrect..

the F1 males will be S/s+(golden, they get the S from the BR male) when crossed to the NH hens this will produce 50 percent silver hens and 50 percent gold hens(culls)/ 50 percent golden roosters(keepers) and 50 percent gold rooster..

you can save time and skip the F1xF1 cross and go directly to NH, this will yield faster results

Marvin You have to have a silver male(sport) to create the Delaware pattern/Silver barred columbian. F1/half barred and half red columbian are all black barred(heterozygous barring)

Jeff
I dont quite get your statement.. F1 roosters is as good candidate to create Delaware patterned birds as a F2 silver barred rooster..

here is why..

the F1 will be E/eWh(E coming from BR parent, not good on this project) B/b+(Barring gene from BR Parent, need it on this project) S/s+(golden, S from Barred Rock parent, need it on this project)..

when crossed to NH hens you will get 50 percent eWh/eWh birds(from NH parent, need it on this project) 50 percent silver wheaten columbian hens(this hens are Delaware patterned at this stage) 50 percent Red barred columbian roosters(not need it on this project and need to be culled) and 50 percent golden(S/s+) Barred Columbian patterned roosters(just like delawares but with a golden tone instead of silver, this birds are keepers) at this stage you can do sibling crossing because we have stablished Homozygosity for eWh/eWh B/-(on hens) and Co/Co...

any other genetic question just let me know
