What great ideas! I usually make some homemade candy and put it in a little decorative tin. Actually, since I started making them, my mom pretty much says I can't come unless I DO bring candy! LOL! Especially my chocolate covered cherries!
A lot of people are mentioning poinsettias, but don't forget a Christmas cactus! They are a lot easier to keep alive through the year, too.
Soap and eggs...you could make a great basket out of those! Just make up a homemade gift basket.
We will bring wine to friends' houses, but my family doesn't drink it either. I have taken a nice decorative candle to someone's house before, also.
I don't think you are supposed to take an empty dish as a gift. At least not where I come from. Unless it is purely decorative and is wrapped appropriately. But, like another poster mentioned, if you make a special dish in it, that would be ok. Something my family does is to have a little snack tray, because we don't eat all day on Thanksgiving. We eat small snacks, so if you do something like that, you could make up a snack platter and gift them the platter.
If it were me, I would want the homemade soaps, though! Oh! And the apple brandy that someone else mentioned!
