Girl acting strange? Getting ready to lay first egg?

Eggs4Sale - Mine were hatched March 17th so our chickens are close in age. They will be 20 weeks on Tuesday. I have 2 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Australorps. None of them have started laying yet. One of the Australorps has a comb and wattle that are bigger and redder than the others so I'm hoping to get an egg from her soon. No egg song or squatting yet though.

Are you sure yours are almost 21 weeks? Mine are almost 20 weeks, and they were hatched in March.

Okay, mine are just a few days older than yours.

I wish they had a sticky on this site that gave the ages that most breeds lay.

BTW, our White-Faced Black Spanish was making the noises that our Black Stars make after they've laid an egg. Hers sounded a little different, that's why I went to investigate. I couldn't for the life of me find an egg. though. I sure hope she's not laying eggs under the house.

Just tossing some data into your "when will they lay" analysis: My RIR's were born 3/2 and started to lay day before yesterday.....

I think I started telling everyone "they are going to lay any day now" about 2 weeks before it actually happened. I kept thinking the wattles/combs were red but really they were pink, NOW they are truly red; they squattted for about 2 weeks prior and sang loud songs. It was the day that 1 of them actually spent alot of time sitting in the nest box that it actually happened the next day.....

Hope that helps, happy for you.... ITS SO FUN!

My RIR is nowhere close to red comb or wattles. The only one that is starting to redden a little more is the White Rock. But the roosters leave all of the hens alone, except the older Black Stars that are already laying. I'm hoping the roos will tell me when a hen is ready!

The Spanish that's is seeming egg-ready has always been red-combed, soooooo...... Guess I have to wait with everyone else!

She avoids the others, so I can't count on a roo to tell me her status.

Unemployed chicken, congratulations on the egg!

Isn't it strange how crazy we get over one little ol' egg?

Oh, how awful! If I suddenly had to tack a few more weeks onto my waiting time, I'd probably rip my hair out.

But at least you won't think they're under-developed!

AK M - Sorry to be off topic but how do your chickens do in the winter in Palmer? I'm from Fairbanks - my step mom lives at Big Lake and is starting to catch this chicken fever that we all have! She's just concerned about winter and keeping them warm.... I have to say I'm jealous of your geography!, I LOVE ALASKA, I MISS it SO much, try to get up there every summer for the Palmer Fair, Talkeetna Festival and gorgeous every other thing about Alaska summers!! No travel funds this year though
