Giving new chicks to a broody hen

We have had great success the two times we have done this. The hens are orpingtons and they have become quite protective of their chicks. We did introduce them at night.

Can you put the chicks in if the hen has only been broody a week, or do I have to wait 3 weeks?

Our hen was broody for about two weeks. Since this is still new to me, I would do some additional research as I am a novice. I just keep in mind that my momma hens know a whole lot more than I do when it comes to raising chicks.
